Fury eyeing fight with Martin
While we all wait for 2020 and lineal champion Tyson Fury to take on Deontay Wilder, we get to figure out in the fall who will fight the “Gyspy King” next? While Wilder is taking Luis Ortiz, Fury is still looking for an opponent to take on in the meantime.
A name that has come up recently in talks to challenge Fury was the former heavyweight champion “Prince” Charles Martin.
Mike Coppinger of The Atheltic tweeted on Thursday that Fury may be interested in taking on the “Lebron James of Boxing.”
Per Coppinger, ESPN is looking for an American for their next fight, which rules out the old reports that hinted that Kubat Pulev would be in the running since being recently reinstated on Monday.

Martin (27-2-1, 23 KOs) is fresh off a fourth-round stoppage of Daniel Martz earlier this month in Minneapolis. He currently holds the distinction of having the second-shortest title reign as a heavyweight champ at 85 days in 2016, with Tony Tucker holding the record at 64 in 1987. Both fighters were holding the IBF title in their tenure as champion.
Fury taking on Martin would be an upgrade in competition as he is coming off a victory against Tom Schwarz in June where he dropped him in two rounds in Vegas. It also would solidify in the report from Coppinger that ESPN is trying to make Fury a brand name to American audiences. That was riding theme and promotion by ESPN leading up to the fight against the German Schwarz. Fury went as far as signing Aerosmith to the crowd afterward once the battle was over.
In terms of a date, Steve Kim of ESPN tweeted late Thursday night that it would take place September 14th or 21st. Should this match comes to fruition; it would be an interesting test for Martin. He is on a path to become champion again, and a victory against Fury would certainly catapult him back into the fold.
