Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia: Five Things We Learnt

The clash between Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) and Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will most likely be remembered for its shocking result.

In a fight that surprised many, Garcia won a majority decision against Haney. The two fighters headlined a Golden Boy Promotions event at the Barclays Center in New York City, NY, presented in association with Matchroom Boxing, Haney Promotions and KingRy Promotions. Fight fans could catch the action live on DAZN as a PPV and PPV.com. Though Haney was the reigning WBC super lightweight champion, Garcia could not win the title due to missing weight.

When It Comes to Ryan Garcia, Looks Can Be Deceiving

Going into fight night, many saw the antics of Garcia as concerning. Others believed that the bout should be cancelled, such was the concern over the behaviour of “King Ry.” In the end, Garcia knocked down Haney three times en route to victory and left the ring in much better shape. While his behaviour was concerning, it appears team Garcia had a much better handle on things than they appeared.

Judging Woes Remain

Just before the main event, Arnold Barboza Jr. (30-0, 11 KOs) won a controversial split decision against Sean McComb (18-2, 5 KOs). For the majority of the bout, Barboza struggled to land clean. McComb’s longer reach allowed him to outbox his opponent and keep him at bay. Despite this, two of the judges saw Barboza winning the fight. It goes to show that bad judging has gone nowhere.

One Last Hurrah for Sergiy Derevyanchenko?

Sergiy Derevyanchenko (15-5, 10 KOs) outclassed Vaughn Alexander (18-11-1, 11 KOs) to a unanimous decision victory. The Ukrainian has been in several tough fights, but at 38, retirement may not be far off. Now that he is back and has a win, it would be surprising if one of the contenders, such as Edgar Berlanga or Diego Pacheco, looked to fight him. Regardless of who he faces next, it does seem like a final run for Derevyanchenko.

Charles Conwell Should Remain Active

Charles Conwell (19-0, 14 KOs) knocked out Nathaniel Gallimore (22-8-1, 17 KOs) in six rounds in a super welterweight clash. This was his first fight since November 2022. The performance was a reminder of just how talented he is. Now that he is with Golden Boy Promotions, we can expect him to be a lot more active from now on.

A number of fighters showed that they deserved additional opportunities with their performances on Saturday night. Namely, Amari Jones (12-0, 11 KOs), Darius Fulghum (11-0, 10 KOs) and Shamar Canal (8-0, 4 KOs). While each still has some way to go before challenging the best in their respective weight classes, fight fans should watch out for each of these fighters.
