Ben Whittaker Talks Frustrating Years
When asked about his fight on February 3, Whittaker said: “I’m trying to stay active, fight and put on performances.” Speaking on his previous injury problems: “It wasn’t really my fault, picking up these little niggles.”
“We had the Covid year, which wasted a year, then I was looking for a promoter, and that wasted a year.” Whittaker added: “I’m excited for the future, and it starts Saturday.”

Whittaker went on to speak about the Azeez-Buatsi fight: “It’s my weight category. It’s a fight I wouldn’t mind getting to – sooner than later.” The West Bromwich native described the impending fight between Azeez and Buatsi as “a 50-50.”
You can see the desire to progress when you watch the English fighter. He is confident in the ring, but his ability shows he is seemingly destined to mix it with the best.
Speaking about his ambition to be in big fights – Whittaker compared himself to Azeez and Buatsi and fighters of that ilk: “Skill-wise, IQ-wise, I’m there if not better than them guys.”

Towards the end of the interview, the West Bromwich fighter spoke about how difficult the journey is from the GB squad to the pro ranks. Watching Whittaker in the interview, it’s clear the unbeaten light heavyweight is full of confidence in his own ability but also very respectful towards his rivals, and realises he needs to progress at the right speed to reach the top.
