KO By Lopez, Wood’s Revenge + Billiam Smith’s Upset And More
Off the Memorial Day Weekend in the U.S., we have lots to go over and discuss from the smashing KO of Michael Conlan by Luis Alberto Lopez for the IBF featherweight title in Belfast to Leigh Wood’s revenge win over Mauricio Lara for the WBA’s 126 lb. title in Manchester to Chris Billiam-Smith’s WBO cruiserweight upset of Lawrence Okolie in Bournemouth and an historic win for the WBO strawweight title for Oscar Collazo of Puerto Rico in California.
And, we’re ready to recap the results and more on the latest “Fight Freaks Unite Recap” Podcast!
Host T.J. Rives returns with insider Dan Rafael of BigFightWeekend.com to go over it all. Dan has insight and analysis on what went wrong for Conlan in front of his huge partisan crowd in Northern Ireland. What did Wood do tactically that was different and helped him get an easy decision win over Lara?
T.J. chimes in with takes on all of the bouts, including the comedic scorecard of an American judge in the Billiam-Smith decision victory with Okolie in CBS’ hometown. Also, why was it such a heart-warming story for Billam-Smith to get the title win.
The guys also go over fight news involving hard hitting, super middleweight prospect Diego Pacheco choosing to extend his deal with Matchroom Boxing and whether, Tyson Fury, who’s apparently out of options of opponents for this Summer, is seriously talking to fight Anthony Joshua later in 2023 or not?
Fury and Wilder?
Then, we turn to nostalgia on the anniversary of the death of three division world champ and hall of famer Johnny Tapia just over a decade ago. Dan has tremendous recollection of Tapia stories and interaction with the volatile fighter, who died from heart complications from massive drug and alcohol abuse throughout his career.
And finally, some GREAT debate on the anniversary of the release of “Rocky III” in world wide theaters 41 years ago in late May. Why does Dan love this movie so much and it’s his favorite of the series?? T.J. has more on Sylvester Stallone’s epic series of movies and does not agree that Rocky vs. Clubber Lang (Mr. T) is the best of those movies.
