Top 5 Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis Knockouts
The lightweight division is one of the most stacked in boxing. There is a plethora of talented fighters vying for glory in that weight class. One of the fighters near the top of the rankings, and in many eyes the top, is Gervonta “Tank” Davis. The 28-year-old Baltimore-born fighter has won all 28 of his professional contests, with 26 coming by knockout. Davis has lit up the lightweight division, with his electrifying hand speed and concussive power. At Big Fight Weekend, we wanted to pay homage by bringing you, the 5 best Gervonta Davis Knockouts.
The 5 best Gervonta Davis Knockouts
Yuriorkis Gamboa
Davis was in complete control of the fight, knocking down Yuriorkis Gamboa in the second, eighth and twelfth rounds, showcasing his excellent shot selection and punch power.
Despite some stamina issues as the fight wore on, “Tank” took care of business in the twelfth, stopping his veteran opponent. The Cuban fighter’s inability to move around made him a sitting duck for Davis and his power punches. The Baltimore native opened the final bell, going toe to toe with Gamboa, with both fighters exchanging eye-catching combinations. Davis sensed the end and landed several heavy uppercuts, followed by a devastating left, prompting referee Jack Reiss to wave the fight off.
Leo Santa Cruz
Davis decided to take a step up in class and go against former four-weight world champion Leo Santa Cruz. The Mexican fighter started the brighter of the two, outworking Davis early on. “Tank” gradually worked himself into the fight before the devastating knockout in round six.
The Baltimore native backed Cruz into the corner, where he fought back bravely against Davis. Unfortunately for Santa Cruz, he left himself open and was met by a monster uppercut, which ended the fight, leaving the Mexican in a crumpled heap. This knockout was without a doubt one of the best Gervonta Davis knockouts. Reflecting on this win after the fight, “Tank” said: “He was right there for it. He punches, but he doesn’t try to get out of the way. There was nowhere for him to go on that knockout because I got him into the corner.”
Luis Sanchez
Gervonta Davis advanced to 14-0 after delivering a brutal ninth round knockout to defeat tough Mexican boxer, Luis Sanchez. Despite being outclassed by Davis, Sanchez kept his composure through the middle rounds, going toe-to-toe with “Tank”. Despite the bravery of the Mexican native, Davis stayed patient and waited for an opening, and when it came, he took full advantage.
Davis pounced on a lapse in concentration from his opponent before delivering a devastating left-hand uppercut, which forced Kenny Bayless to end the fight to give “Tank” the victory.
Ricardo Nunez
Davis made light work of Ricardo Nunez, winning in the second round via a TKO victory. Despite the protests from Nunez, he looked in trouble and left referee Harvey Dock with no choice but to award Davis the victory.
Nunez was the mandatory challenger for Davis but was outclassed from the first bell. The knockout wasn’t concussive, but Nunez looked unsteady on his feet. After coming out of a clinch, Davis unloaded on his opponent with some heavy shots to the head, which forced Dock to wave the fight off.
Rolando Romero
“Tank” didn’t have this fight all his own way. For the first six rounds, Rolando Romero used his reach advantage to negate Gervonta Davis and frustrate him. Unfortunately for Romero, it only takes one punch from “Tank” to end a fight, and that one punch bought a violent conclusion to this contest in round six.
Davis stayed patient trying to get beyond his opponent’s effective jab. Romero launched an attack in round six but “Tank” caught his opponent with a thudding left-hand counter which floored his rival – sending him face-first into the ropes.
Despite beating the count, the referee was unsatisfied with his responses and waved the fight off, giving another knockout victory to Davis. All eyes will now turn to April 22 in Las Vegas, when “Tank” goes up against Ryan Garcia.
