WBA Orders Undisputed Hyun Mi Choi-Alicya Baumgardner Bout

Looks like we could be getting next an undisputed women’s junior lightweight title fight between American Alicya Baumgardner and Korean Hyun Mi Choi.

Tuesday afternoon the World Boxing Association ordered Choi to come to agreement with Baumgarner in the next 30 days or the proposed bout will head to a purse bid.

A month ago Baumgardner, 13-1, 7 KOs, scored a dramatic a split decision upset over fellow American Makaela Mayer in England and win the unified WBC/IBF/WBO women’s junior lightweight championships.

The Compubox punch stats showed Baumgardner critically out landing the Californian Mayer in power punches 79 – 39 for the fight to help her get the 10 round decision.

“The World Boxing Association (WBA), through its Championships Committee, ordered the bout between super featherweight champion Hyun Mi Choi and American Alicya Baumgardner, owner of the WBC, IBF and WBO belts.

The WBA has put all its efforts in the One Boxing project, which seeks to give the possibility to the champions to unify their crowns and in this case, after an analysis, it was determined that there is no impediment for the champion of the pioneer organization to face the American for the undisputed 130 lbs. title.

The Committee placed Baumgardner as the mandatory challenger and now the teams of both fighters will have a period of 30 days to negotiate the fight and reach an agreement.

If the fight does not take place within the period granted or in the event that either party refuses to sign the contract, the committee may order an Purse Bid with a 50% split for each of the champions. This decision renders any previous ruling null and void.”

Baumgardner made clear in the ring in London four weeks ago that she wasn’t interested in giving rival Mayer an immediate rematch and at the same time, what she wanted instead,

“I worked my ass off to get here….for all the doubters, I told ya’ll haters. I did that. I did that- unified champion of the world. I’m thankful. I’m blessed,” Baumgardner told Sky Sports in the ring.

“Nah, I’m not giving her (Mayer) no rematch. We want to fight Choi.”

As for Choi, 20-0-1, she was also in the ring in October beating Candian Vanessa Bradford by decision to retain her version of the 130 lb. title that she’s held since 2013.

Now, we’ll await whether the sides can agree or whether the purse bid might be necessary for a Baumgardner-Choi bout in the first part of 2023?
