Errol Spence On Facing Ugas- “High Stakes Bring Out Best In Me”
Off another significant setback out of the ring, Unified Welterweight champ Errol Spence knows that he’s got a lot to prove come April 16 in his ring return. And, oh by by the way, his opponent is no easy obstacle either.
The Texan Spence took part Wednesday afternoon in the launch press conference for his WBC/IBF/WBA World Welterweight title battle with Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas to be held at the Dallas Cowboys massive home, AT&T Stadium. And, the unbeaten champ made clear that off eye surgery for a detached retina, he nows it will be a challenge

“There’s nothing better than fighting in front of my hometown fans at AT&T Stadium,” said Spence Wednesday.
“This is the perfect stage for me to fight for a third welterweight world title and unify the championships. I’m healthy and ready to go. Yordenis Ugas has proven to be a tough champion and I know he will bring his very best. It’s a high-stakes fight on a big stage and that always brings out the best in me. The fans should expect fireworks at AT&T Stadium and on Showtime PPV on April 16.’’
Spence, 27-0, 21 KOs, will headline again at the massive 90,000 seat venue known as “Jerry’s World” for the Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones. He’s fought on PPV there three previous times, including his win in December of 2020 over contender Danny Garcia.
For his part, Jones was more than proud to welcome the fighters on Wednesday at the news conference,

“Errol Spence vs. Yordenis Ugas is a fight that will once again show the world how passionate boxing fans are in North Texas.” Jones said. “We’re so proud of Errol. He’s from here in Desoto (Texas). But, the thing I’m proud of is when he fights at this stadium, he brings the crowd with him…this is big deal to the Dallas Cowboys. It’s a big deal to this stadium. It’s a big deal to sports.
You don’t have to use your imagination to talk about the possibility and the talent that’s involved and the skill in this fight. I want it to be on par with the 2-3 greatest fights we’ve had here. And we’ve had some good ones here.”
As for Ugas, he’s 27-4, and replaced Spence on last than two weeks notice in August due to Spence’s eye injury in training and eventual surgery. Ugas then scored the upset win in Las Vegas over Manny Pacquiao by decision in a career-defining moment. He used his superior jab and long right hand to keep Pacquiao at bay to score the impressive 12 round unanimous decision win.
It’s a tremendous blessing to be in another big pay-per-view fight, especially against a great champion and top pound-for-pound fighter like Errol Spence Jr.,” said Ugas Wednesday. “These are the types of fights that fans deserve. We both have plenty of time to prepare for each other, which means we are primed and ready to give the fans a show.”
There’s certainly a lot of intrigue for this one on paper.
Now, we wait to see how much the public will be for the live gate and for the Showtime PPV coming next month.
