Ryan Garcia Dumps Reynoso- Adds Joe Goosen To Train Him

Say this for unbeaten Lightweight contender Ryan Garcia, he stays in the news for lots of reasons besides fighting. Just days after we wrote about an interview where he discussed having been so depressed last year that he thought of suicide, Garcia has announced that he’s switching trainers for his upcoming return to the ring from a year layoff.

Garcia is slated to fight Emmanuel Tagoe at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX, April 9th and he posted on social media Friday night that he’s dumping his trainer of the last few years Mexican Eddy Reynoso and will go with long time California World title cornerman/now Fox Sports analyst, Joe Goosen,

“I’m excited to announce that I will now be working with [California] Hall of Fame trainer Joe Goossen, in addition to my father, Henry Garcia,” Garcia  wrote. “Joe’s legendary career spans several decades working with championship fighters.

“I worked with Joe when I was growing up, and the two of us have maintained a great relationship over the years. I can’t wait to pick back up where we left off, and to continue this journey together.

I would like to thank Eddy Reynoso for everything. Eddy has ben in my corner since 2018, and I’ve learned a lot from him, both inside and outside the ring. We built an incredible friendship that I’ll always cherish…”

Reynoso is best known for training future Hall of Famer Canelo Alvarez throughout his career. Alvarez has also worked closely with Garcia in the past.

As Garcia referenced, he trained with Goosen early on in his career before being with Reynoso for around three years.  Of course, Garcia has only had one fight in almost two years now- a TKO win over England’s Luke Campbell 13 months ago.

And, after that victory, which put him in line for a possible Lightweight world title shot, Garcia suddenly disappeared from the fight game citing mental health issues.

As we wrote earlier this week, his problems grew so great that Garcia told “Inside Boxing Live” host Dan Canobbio, he actually contemplated suicide.

When I was deep in it (depression), I didn’t think I was going to live,” Garcia told Canobbio. “I was so depressive. I was into bad habits. I was drinking. And, I never drink. Ever. But, I was getting drunk all the time. I wanted to kill myself at one point. I was so paralyzed in my mind.

“I couldn’t get out of it. If I could explain it, in words…the torment I was feeling, I would…So bad. So intense. I just thought, maybe I just rather not be here.”

Garcia has obviously gotten back on track mentally, but physically, he’s still recovering from an injured hand, which scrapped his bout late last year with JoJo Diaz.

Now, he will headline for Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions against the veteran Tagoe, who hasn’t lost a fight since his only loss in 2004. A stretch of 32 straight wins against mainly lower level competition in Ghana and Africa.

As for Goosen, he’s no stranger to having worked with prominent championship fighters like Michael Nunn, the late Diego Corrales and most recently, former Heavyweight title holder Andy Ruiz.
