Jermall Charlo Robbery Charges Dismissed Monday

WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo got a victory outside the ring on Monday. That’s when authorities in San Antonio, TX, dismissed all robbery charges from a July incident in a local sports restaurant dispute over paying his bill.

TMZ reported first that the 32-0 WBC titleholder had three charges, including the most serious of “felony robbery,”dismissed by the Bexar County prosecutors,

As we wrote last Summer, Charlo got into a dispute at the restaurant on the night before his twin brother Jermell fought Brian Castano for the Undisputed Jr. Middleweight title in San Antonio. That dispute was over whether or not his credit card had been declined and whether he had grabbed the waitress in an altercation to take his card back or not?

The 31 year old Charlo, through his attorney, denied the robbery charges and the attorney maintained from the outset that there were witnesses with Charlo that disputed the restaurant’s account. And, most importantly, there was video backing up Charlo’s version of what happened.

TMZ reached that attorney, Kent Schaffer, Monday afternoon for comments on the dismissal of charges,

“Police eventually turned over the surveillance tapes that showed everything that our witnesses said was true,” Schaffer tells us. “Jermall never robbed anyone at this nightclub and never used force or threat of force against anyone. We have been saying this the whole time he did nothing wrong.”

“We presented the evidence to the ADA who came to the same conclusion — the surveillance video was a huge part of getting the case dismissed. And the 6 witnesses were also a key factor.”

Schaffer continued, “Jermall is ecstatic and training for his next fight — this is something that has been hanging over his head since August — he can now get back to fighting instead of worrying about going to trial for something he didn’t do.” 

That “next fight” may very well be a mega-payday against Undisputed Super Middleweight Champ, Canelo Alvarez, for May. Alvarez, who’s golfing this week in the PGA Tour’s AT&T Celebrity Pro-Am tournament in California, is mulling over whether he wants to do another deal with Premier Boxing Champions or not?

Charlo, who is a PBC fighter, is a popular attractive draw for PBC and a pay per view against the four division champion Canelo would likely be part of “Cinco de Mayo” weekend in Las Vegas.
