Off Injury Edgar Berlanga Headlines In March

One of the hard punching, young contenders in the middle weight classes is coming back for the first time since an injury in his last bout. And, for Edgar “the Chosen One” Berlanga, he’s eager to get back to knocking opponents out.

The Super Middleweight Berglanga will headline for Top Rank Boxing’s March 19th show set for the Madison Square Garden Hulu Theater in an ESPN televised main event. The promotion made the announcement Thursday that Berlanga, who began his career with 16 consecutive first round KO’s, is ready to take the next headlining step by fighting veteran Steve Rolls,

Berlanga, 18-0, 16 KOs, including 16 straight first round KOs to start his career, was last seen on the undercard of Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder III. That’s, when he tore his bicep late in a 10 round decision win over Marcelo Esteban Coceres.

Now, he has rehabbed and is back training to battle the 37 year old Rolls, who’s most known for having been kayoed by Gennady Golovkin in June 2019.

“I’m so excited to fight in my first main event in my hometown. It’s a dream come true for a fighter representing New York City and Puerto Rico. I can’t wait to show the world what I’m truly about. We are going to blow the roof off the Hulu Theater, so grab your tickets early and get your popcorn ready for this performance,” the Brooklyn native Berlanga said in a Top Rank statement confirming the main event Thursday.

Top Rank also announced that it will be a Junior Middleweight co-feature, as 19-year-old Puerto Rican star Xander Zayas will fight in his first scheduled eight-rounder against Louisiana-born spoiler Quincy “Chico” LaVallais.

The eight round ESPN televised opener will see the return of Lightweight U.S. Olympic Silver Medalist Keyshawn Davis against Mexican veteran Esteban Sanchez.

Both Zayas and Davis are ticket for stardom and future world title contention.

“Edgar, Xander and Keyshawn are future pound-for-pound superstars, and it will be a special evening in front of a sold-out New York City crowd,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “All three are in there with the toughest fights of their respective careers, but I expect them to pass with flying colors.”
