Alen Babic and The Quest For Bridgerweight

To say undefeated Bridgerweight Alen Babic is treating his fight against David Spilmont like a phone call he received from his promoter Eddie Hearn two weeks ago would be accurate. But, it would also be a disservice to anyone waiting for the matchup on the Joseph Parker-Derek Chisora 2 undercard live this Saturday from Manchester.

I’ll get to the Bridgerweight label in a second, but this was Babic on how Hearn set his latest matchup up that will air on the streaming service DAZN except in Australia and New Zealand,

“Two weeks ago, you [Eddie] slid into my DM’s and asked if I wanted to fight, I said yeah let’s go,” Babic said at the undercard press conference on Thursday.”People have routine victories, I have routine knockouts, I think Saturday is going to be another routine knockout. I’m going to operate like John Wick.”

Ironically, two weeks was the last time the challenger Spilmont fought. That was a six-round majority draw against Siril Makiadi and the drywaller from France is going to look to avoid being another fighter on the Babic knockout reel. Babic mentioned that his mission after this fight is to challenge on for the bridgerweight title down the line.

“Let’s go, like I said I have a brilliant team, we are going for the Bridgerweight Title. I’m really into it and let’s go, I’m going to give my whole life to it and I’m sure we’re going to get it,” Babic stated.

Last November when this idea of a new fake semi-heavyweight came out, I hated it. Still do, but my disdain is Babic’s gain as it is what his team is after, currently in the hands of Oscar Rivas. The 31-year-old Croatian likes fighting for a living and it shows every time they ask about it for him long-term.

“I like this, I like this living. I give it all to boxing and for the next five to six years I just want to box – I don’t want to do anything else.” Babic noted.

If anything else out of this fight to gain is how long will go. The outside optics before the opening bell for this one say as long as Babic lets it Saturday night in Manchester.
