Will Josh Taylor-Jose Ramirez Deliver Undisputed Classic?

Coming up at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas, an Undisputed Jr. Middleweight Title showdown will be the first fight to have fans in the desert since the Covid 19 pandemic began last year. The question is: will Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez deliver a fight worth remembering?

The two unbeaten, two World Title belt, 140 lb. champs will cap off the Top Rank Boxing card and be televised by ESPN. And, the belief is that it will be  thrilling action packed showdown,

The 17-0, 13 KO’s Scotsman Taylor, was last in action in September against his IBF mandatory opponent Apinun Khongsong. As Marquis Johns wrote, this bout was over in under two minutes, as Taylor, the IBF and WBA champs, dropped the Thai Khongsong with a body shot that he never got up from in the opening frame.

Taylor “The Tartan Tornado” is most known for his World Boxing Super Series finale’ win over American, Regis Prograis, on a 12 round decision in October 2019. That added Prograis’ WBA belt to his IBF title at Jr. Middleweight.

As for Ramirez, he was last in the ring in late August in Vegas against former world champ, Russian Viktor Postol. In a hard fought battle, the 28 year old Ramirez successfully defended his WBC/WBO Jr. Welterweight titles with a 12 round majority decision.

That improved the Californian’s record to 26-0 with 17 KOs with his best career coming in his Unification bout with Maurice Hooker. The Californian’s sixth round stoppage of Hooker improved him  garnered him the WBO belt to go along with the WBC title that he already held.

There are numerous top contenders at 140 lb. who will anxiously await Saturday night’s winner. That, includes Prograis, who would love to get a rematch with Taylor, should he win.

One of the top draws among the smaller weight fighters in the world, Gervonta “Tank” Davis will be in action on a Showtime PPV coming in late June. And, he has made clear that he would be willing to move up to Jr. Welterweight and could challenge the winner, too.
