All This Boxing On June 19th- A Viewer’s Guide

I don’t know if you are near a calendar, but June 19th is shaping up to be a day that will either be one of quantity or the best “stay-busy fight-day” ever, as with the move of Temfimo Lopez and George Kambossos Jr. title fight will make it five major boxing cards taking place on this day.

Why all five on the same day? Because boxing loves to counter program itself to levels of self-sabotage, that’s why.

So, which ones should I watch, and do I need to peep everything that takes place on the 19th? I made this handy viewer’s guide for you on what you need to keep an eye out for on all of these cards to save you time and possibly draining your remote batteries looking for who to watch.

Let’s start with the Showtime card headlining the WBC Middleweight champion Charlo in a stay-busy defense against Montiel. When Showtime released their summer schedule last month, all swords were drawn at this matchup as being one of the weaker headliners. Montiel is coming off his one-round destruction of James Kirkland in a fight that has everyone questioning what’s left of the ring career of Kirkland?

Worth noting that Showtime Exec Stephen Esponiza mentioned that he offered a fight for Charlo to take on Demetrius Andrade before that fell thru.  Andrade getting told by Canelo Alvarez to “get the f— outta here” at post-fight press conferences may slowly bring that convo back up about taking on Charlo, again.

Other than that, this contest on paper is a one-sided one for Charlo.

The rest of the card?

Isaac Cruz is back after a very sluggish win against Jose Matias Romero in what should be a firefight against Francisco Vargas. Vargas isn’t the same guy and hasn’t been for years, but should have just enough left in the 36-year-old tank to make it interesting for undefeated Cruz, aspiring to be the WBA mandatory for the belt held by Teofimo Lopez currently.

Kudratillo Abdukakhorov makes his in-ring return since 2019 against Cesar Miguel Barrionuevo, who has been off for about as long as he stays in a position to be an IBF mandatory for Errol Spence Jr.

Ranking (1 to 5, 1 being best, 5 is worst): 4. I like the Cruz-Vargas fight for as long as it lasts. Other than that, there isn’t much here.

The Undisputed champion at Lightweight Teofimo Lopez takes on his mandatory challenger in George Kambosos in Miami on pay-per-view in a fight that was overbid for by Triller and moved two weeks back because of Floyd Mayweather. As of this writing, Lopez is a 9 to 1 favorite to retain, and I must admit, I think Kambosos is being slighted. Having said that, this is an IBF mandatory, and the track record of these fights being close has usually been non-existent.

The rest of the card?

With Triller, who knows as they tend to pump in music acts, comedians, and whatever they can do to put Snoop Dogg and Mario Lopez in front of us. In the ring, it’s reported that Michael Hunter will take on Mike Wilson in a WBA Heavyweight title eliminator. “White Delight” will be making a huge step up from Cruiserweight to take on Hunter, who turned down the terms of the Filip Hrgovic fight for this one.

Also, a Heavyweight legends bout between Evander Holyfield and Kevin McBride isn’t happening on this card. Instead, there may be a Jono Carroll sighting taking on Andy Vences.

Ranking (1 to 5):  5 (as in really bad). Triller, so far for these shows, has music in the forefront, boxing as the intermissions. These fights look to be brief intermissions, however and there isn’t going to be any music and a couple of lopsided affairs behind a paywall. Good luck and godspeed on this.

Maybe you don’t want to pay for a Teofimo Lopez fight; well, fear not. Instead, check with your local cable provider, and this exhibition will gladly take your money! We know with Chavez Sr. and Camacho Jr., it will be spirited fun in the ring for a few rounds, but I’m here for the sanctioned co-main event.

The rest of the card?

Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. is taking on former UFC champ and legend Anderson Silva in the co-main event. I’m here for all of that silliness. Unfortunately, the rest of the card has nothing I’m here for, but there is a Ramon Alvarez, or as boxing scribe, Steve Kim calls him “Fredo Alvarez” sighting in a 10 rounder.

Ranking (1 to 5): 2. I’m here for “The JCC Sr. and Jr. Show” they have been running a few times now. More often than not, we don’t know what to expect from Jr., which is where all the intrigue is on this card. Everything else is as expected.

Naoya Inoue vs. Michael Dasmarinas – ESPN

“The Monster” Inoue makes his return since stopping Jason Moloney last October back to Las Vegas as he takes on “Hot and Spicy” Michael Dasmarinas in what should be a fun Top Rank main event for as long as it lasts. But, of course, how long will it last will solely be on if Inoue stops Dasmarinas as this is a huge jump in competition for him, and history has shown that Inoue makes for early nights when need be.

The rest of the card?

Top Rank hasn’t made what will be on the rest of the card, but expect prospects from the Top Rank camp to make their returns. I can tell you personally one of those names is Haven Brady Jr. will be on this card against an opponent to be announced when I spoke to him last week.

Ranking (1 to 5): 3. I expect this to be officially a showcase card and with plenty of prospects in graduated matchups once their names all roll out.

Undefeated Middleweight contender Jaime Munguia is back in action in his native El Paso, Texas. He takes on Maciej Sulecki in a fight that had seen Sulecki pull out of, his replacement D’Mitrius Ballard withdraw due to injury and now, rescheduled with Sulecki back on board.

What is at stake is nothing, but to keep Munguia in against a top 10 middleweight in Sulecki. Will this get him closer to current titleholder Demetrius Andrade? Only, if and when he is made mandatory for him.

The rest of the card?

The co-main event is Uzbek contender Bektemir “Bully” Melikuziev in a tough test against former world title challenger Gabriel Rosado for all of those wanting Rosado to be challenging up and comers. Then, Ibeth Zamora defends her WBC Flyweight title against Marlen Esparza, Blair “The Flair” Cobbs opens up the DAZN stream against veteran Brad Solomon.

Ranking (1 to 5): 1. This is a complete card up and down in terms of fights that may be competitive, which the other cards don’t have.
