Plant on Truax- ‘He Has To Be Taken Seriously’

It’s Caleb Plant fight week and he defends his IBF Super middleweight title on Saturday, January 30 on Fox against Caleb Truax from Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles. Plant (20-0, 12 KOs), comes into this contest as the third title defense of his IBF title, most recently winning last February in a hometown bout against Vincent Feigenbutz.

Plant speaking with the media last week was asked about where Truax ranks on his resume? Plant stated that he wouldn’t slot him, but wasn’t looking past him this Saturday.

“It’s hard to say where Caleb Truax ranks in terms of past opponents,” Plant said on the media conference call last week. I have to get in there with him. Styles make fights so after January 30, I’ll have a better idea. I know he’s a veteran, has a lot of experience, and is a former world champion who has upset people before, so he has to be taken seriously.

Truax (31-4-2, 19KOs) comes into this bout as almost a 15 to 1 underdog and is expected since the former world champion has was in action last January in a decision win but has been bitten by injuries and illness the past two years. Plant stated to him that in the ring, the gambling lines don’t matter.

“Me against Jose Uzcategui, they had me the underdog and they had it wrong  So I don’t pay attention to numbers, betting odds—that’s not how I became a world champion and how I’m going to stay world champion. My job is to go in there fully focused on the task at hand. I could care less what the odds say, I know what I need to go in there and do because betting odds don’t win or lose fights,” Plant said.

Plant has visions of unification bouts at 168 pounds and has had his name mentioned in conversations of a potential matchup against Canelo Alvarez. That seems to be an end of the year event for it to be a possibility but none of that happens if he loses on Saturday. Plant understood this.

“I feel like there are unification fights to be made and I feel like they will happen. But as of now, January 30 has my full attention. After that, we’ll have a better understanding of how the cards will fall in the super middleweight division and we’ll be ready to make our next move,” Plant noted.
