Marshall stops Rankin to capture title

It’s been over a year since we saw Savannah Marshall (9-0, 7 KOs) in action on the Oleksandr Usyk-Dereck Chisora undercard she looked dominant, taking out Hannah Rankin (9-5, 2 KOs) by seventh-round stoppage to take the vacant WBO Women’s Middleweight title.

1:59 of round seven was the official time this was wrapped up.

The contest came from The SSE Arena, Wembley, and was seen on Sky Sports pay-per-view in the United Kingdom and on the streaming service DAZN in the United States.

Marshall from the onset was able to use her reach over Rankin as this 10 round contest was for the vacant WBO Middleweight women’s title.  Rankin is now the common opponent parallel as she has taken on Marshall in this contest and faced her longtime rival Claressa Shields back in 2018.  The size of Marshall in the ring was pretty apparent and so was the boxing as by the third round, she began picking her spots and wasn’t missing when she was.

Rankin’s troubles seemed to stem from not being able to land any accurate punches. She came into the fight as a huge underdog to the two-time Olympian and was game for the fight, just wasn’t able to get anything going. While the broadcast sounded slanted to Marshall, it was very clear that Marshall was beginning to load up more on shots as the fight grew on in what slowly became one-way traffic.

That one-way traffic finally added up as an accumulation of punches which caused Rankin to take a knee and to be finally waived off by the referee Phil Edwards to mercifully end this one.

What happens from here remains to be seen but if you thought the talk of Shields and Marshall was going to be silenced, Marshall’s trainer Peter Fury called her out once this contest was over. Pretty sure “The GWOAT” will respond via social to that sooner than later.

In fact Shields, just did as she was watching the fight.
