Saturday PBC Debut Not Only Excitement For Regis Prograis

Former WBA Junior welterweight champ Regis Prograis is looking forward to a fresh start in the ring Saturday night in San Antonio, TX, as part of the Gervonta Davis – Leo Santa Cruz pay-per-view. However, that’s not the only “new thing” that will be part of his life, shortly.

That’s because the Louisiana native Prograis is slated to become a father for the third time at some point this weekend, as well.

Boxingscene senior writer Keith Idec had more on Prograis and the dilemma of him fighting his non-title bout at the Alamodome while his wife Raquel is in the final stage of pregnancy with their third child,

Prograis, who was previously present for the birth of his son and daughter, told the site,

“My wife is real good. She handles the household and stuff like that. The main thing is just to train and be focused. This is my job, my passion and what I love to do. So, I’m gonna do this and then go tend to that. But October has been a very, very busy month for me. I can’t wait until October is over. It’ll be like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders once October’s done.

“I can’t wait to get home because I’ll have a brand-new baby waiting for me when I get back.”

“But if she didn’t have the baby yet, I’ll need to get out of here just to catch the birth of the baby. It all depends. But I think she’ll have the baby before the fight. So, if she has the baby before the fight, she’ll be at home and she’ll be OK.”

As Idec pointed out, Prograis (24-1,20 KOs) now lives in the Houston suburb of  Katy, Texas, a couple of hours away from San Antonio and he intends to drive, if he is able post-fight, to be with his wife at some point in the early morning hours of Sunday.

“It’s close,” Prograis said. “I ain’t gotta wait for no planes, none of that. So, as soon as I’m done, as soon as the show is done, I can get out of here and tend to what I’ve gotta do. It depends what’s going on. If she had the baby already and everything is fine, I might just chill out until Sunday.

It’s also a significant night for the fighter nicknamed “Rougarou” in his professional career. This, as for the first time he is fighting under the Premier Boxing Champions umbrella on the pay-per-view in hopes of more significant fights and larger pay days.

Prograis had an amicable parting earlier this year with Lou Dibella and his promotional outlet earlier this year. Dibella had promoted his rise including making it to the World Boxing Super Series finale’ last October, where Scotsman Josh Taylor beat him in the 12-round unification bout for his only pro loss.

At the moment, Prograis has only signed a one-flight deal to be part of Saturday night’s pay-per-view, but with the hopes that he’ll get either a 140 lb. rematch with Taylor. Or, he could move up to 147 lb., where PBC has numerous Welterweight contenders and unified Champion Errol Spence, as well.

So, he’s looking for excitement in the ring and also, from the delivery room with his wife.
