Unified Champ Joshua re-emerged on social media Saturday

Things have been quiet around Unified Heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, and maybe, too quiet. Well, on Saturday the 30-year-old WBA, IBF and WBO Heavyweight champ resurfaced on social media.

Joshua first posted a video showing him from the waist up, while doing turns and throwing punches at a heavy bag.

The bigger “splash” however, was the announcement that Joshua and WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, will be part of the new EA Sports combat video game “UFC4.”

EA will release the latest version of their game in mid-August and it is the first time that boxers have been offered as options for gamers to compete with.

The 23 – 1 Joshua is still in limbo regarding his next fight. That was supposed to have been last month against IBF number one contender, Kubrat Pulev, at Tottenham Hotspur stadium in London but the Covid 19 pandemic has delayed the fight indefinitely.

In the interim,  Joshua was seen in public on crutches during an early June “Black Lives Matter” social injustice rally in Watford, England. and with a brace on his left knee. Joshua apparently suffered a knee injury while running during training, according to The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger, who reported that the injury was mild and would be rehabilitated in 4 to 6 weeks.

Joshua, nor anyone representing him, has spoken publicly about the injury or his rehab.

Besides the knee injury, what’s further delaying the Pulev fight from being set is that Matchroom Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, has maintained they don’t want to hold the title bout without fans present. And, they would therefore, forgo millions of dollars in potential live gate revenue.

Joshua regained his unified titles last December with a lopsided 12-round decision in a rematch win over American Andy Ruiz. That fight was held in Saudi Arabia, and that is a location that Hearn and Matchroom maybe considering to hold the Joshua – Pulev fight.

And speaking of Fury, it is believed that he will defend the WBC version of the title against former champ, Deontay Wilder, in their fight in Las Vegas tentatively set for December 19th. Like Joshua’s situation, Fury’s promoter, Top Rank Boxing and Premier Boxing Champions/Haymon Promotions, which handles Wilder, would like to have some fans present for live gate revenue at that third fight.
