What comes next for Andy Cruz?
Andy Cruz (7-1, 4 KOs) is now reportedly a promotional free agent.
The Cuban boxer had begun his professional career with Matchroom Boxing. After eight fights with them, however, it now appears his contract with them has ended. Cruz was last seen in action against Abraham Montoya earlier this month.
With ‘El Diamante’ now reportedly out of contract, boxing fans may be wondering what comes next for him. Big Fight Weekend takes a look at which promotional company he could end up with.
What comes next for Andy Cruz?
Top Rank
Cruz has spoken about moving down in weight to the super featherweight division. Doing so could put him on the path to challenging Emanuel Navarrete and O’Shaquie Foster for their respective world titles. It just so happens that both of those men are promoted by Top Rank. Cruz would make it a lot easier to get in line to fight for a world title should he sign with Top Rank.
The company also promotes lightweight world champions Abdullah Mason and Raymond Muratalla. Should Cruz choose to not change weight classes, he could find himself getting a second crack at a 135-lb title by aligning with Top Rank.
Premier Boxing Champions
Cruz, a Cuban, would not be the first fighter from his country to box under the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) banner. Fighters such as David Morrell and Yoenli Hernández are just two of many Cubans who have done so. Although none of the world champions at lightweight or super featherweight are currently with PBC, that could soon change when Lamont Roach Jr. faces William Zepeda. Should Cruz sign with PBC and Roach become WBC lightweight world champion, that is a fight that could materialize someday.
Re-signing with Matchroom Boxing
Ultimately, Cruz could just re-sign with Matchroom Boxing. The company gave him his professional boxing debut and guided him to a world title shot after just six fights. They do not promote any of the male world champions at lightweight or super featherweight, but have worked with them in the past in collaboration with Top Rank.
