On Saturday, March 30, Gilberto Ramirez (46-1, 30 KOs) defeated Arsen Goulamirian (27-1, 19 KOs) by unanimous decision at the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Inglewood live on DAZN. “Zurdo” boxed brilliantly and created history, becoming the first-ever Mexican cruiserweight titleholder.

The first round was a cagey opening, with Ramirez looking to control the distance, with Goulamirian seemingly hurting “Zurdo” in the second with a body shot. Ramirez recovered well and began working well off his jab – putting together eye-catching combinations. The next few rounds saw the Mexican southpaw have success inside and at a distance as he varied his attacks impressively between the head and body.

The champion had fleeting success in the middle rounds, but “Zurdo” was dominant and took the power of the Armenian-born fighter and fired back brilliantly. As the fight entered the latter rounds, Ramirez continued to work impressively inside, landing the uppercut almost at will during the whole fight. Goulamirian tried to force a knockout, but “Zurdo” was too slick for his opponent. The final round saw “Zurdo” continue to mix his attacks up, frustrating the champion, who couldn’t get any momentum going. It was an impressive showing from Ramirez, and it was reflected on the judge’s scorecards, who all scored it 118-110.

In the post-fight interview, “Zurdo” described the victory and becoming cruiserweight world champion as a “Dream come true.” He added: “Teamwork, team effort.”

When asked what gave him the confidence he could win this fight, he said: “I’m a big boy. I’m strong.”

He added: “I’m ready for anyone.”

Undercard

In the co-main event of the evening, Alexis Rocha (24-2, 16 KOs) impressed against a brave Fredrick Lawson (30-5, 22 KOs), with Lawson’s corner pulling their fighter out at the end of round seven, awarding the Californian fighter the win by TKO in what was a competitive yet impressive showing from the American fighter.

Ricardo Sandoval (24-2, 17 KOs) won an entertaining rematch against Carlos Buitrago (38-13-1, 22 KOs), with the ringside physician waving off the fight at the end of round eight.

Santiago Dominguez (27-0, 20 KOs) extended his 100% record with a split decision win over Jose Sanchez (14-4-1, 4 KOs), with the judge’s scorecards reading 97-93 for Sanchez and 97-93 and 96-94 for Dominguez.

Joel Iriarte 2-0, 2 KO) impressed again, winning by first-round TKO against Kevin Beltran Aguirre (5-3, 2 KOs).

Rowdy Montgomery (11-5-1, 8 KOs) caused an upset in the prelims, defeating Kareem Hackett (12-1, 6 KOs) by third-round KO.

Jose Mancilla (1-0, 1 KO) won on his professional debut against Rueben Johnson (0-6, 0 KOs) by a first-round KO.
