Fight Recap

The early rounds (aside from most of round two) saw Rocha being able to outbox his opponent. He frequently threw out the jab and was landing it, allowing him to control the action. Although Curiel landed combinations in round two that stunned Rocha, “Lex” regained control. Curiel chasing him around the ring only allowed Rocha to continue outboxing the former Mexican Olympian.

As the fight entered the middle rounds, Rocha started to come forward. This allowed Curiel to land several uppercuts in the sixth. Both men went toe to toe in the seventh round, benefitting Curiel as he started to close the gap on the scorecards. Up until the final round, it was a back-and-forth fight as both fighters looked determined to come out on top. In the end, two judges had the contest even, resulting in a majority draw and both fighters itching for a rematch.

“I definitely felt like I had done what I had to do to win the fight,” said Curiel. “I’m sure he would say the same. At the end of the day, the fans are the best judges, and based on the crowd’s reactions, they won tonight. I hope we can run it back again next year. For now, I want to enjoy the holidays with my family.”
