Three Ways David Avanesyan Can Defeat Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis

David Avanesyan (30-4-1, 18 KOs) will take on the gargantuan challenge of facing Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for Ennis’ IBF welterweight title. The entire card will be shown live globally on DAZN and promoted by Matchroom Boxing. Ahead of fight night, we are bringing you three possible ways “Ava” can shock the boxing world and dethrone “Boots.”

Three Potential Ways David Avanesyan Can Defeat Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis

Making Ennis Second Guess

Avanesyan may be turning 36 on August 15, and outside of the top 10 in the IBF rankings, but he’s proven throughout his career that he carries power. One key thing Avanesyan needs to do is to make “Boots” second guess himself, and he does that by making him feel his power.

“Ava” has nothing to lose, it’s a last-chance saloon, for the tough, durable Armenian. Ennis has been known to drop his guard occasionally, and that’s where Avanesyan needs to time his punches and ensure they carry spite, to make sure Ennis second guesses himself.

Apply Pressure

Avesnesyan needs to do what he does best and apply pressure on “Boots.” He needs to get inside – timing his punches well, and work the body of “Boots” to slow down the Philly native.

The Armenian national is heavy-handed and will need to put power into everything he throws. It’s vital that Avanesyan gets into his groove quickly and keeps “Boots” guessing – overwise it could be a long night for “Ava,” if he doesn’t apply pressure against his opponent early.

Varying His Attacks

When Avenesyan gets in the pocket, he needs to vary his attacks to the head and body – and slow down and stop Ennis from picking his shots. Varying his attacks will make Enis wary of what is coming back, and if the Russian-born fighter has any hope of causing the upset, he needs to close the distance and get inside and let his power punches go.

“Boots” is the overwhelming favourite, but upsets happen, as we all saw when Buster Douglas defeated Mike Tyson. This would be another huge upset, especially after Avanesyan was blown away by Terence Crawford – but he has plenty of experience – and he will need to utilise that experience to cause a monumental upset and dethrone the IBF champion.
