Who Is Regis Prograis?

Regis “Rougarou” Prograis has enjoyed an impressive rise to the top table in the light welterweight division. He has amassed a record of 28-1 with 24 wins by knockout. Prograis has suffered defeat only once in a majority decision points loss against Josh Taylor. Rougarou has recently signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing. Prograis is ready to make his Matchroom debut against Danielito Zorrilla on June 17. As we build up to the fight, we wanted to introduce you to the real Regis Prograis.

Introducing the Real Regis Prograis

Regis Prograis vs Danielito Zorrilla

Prograis and Zorrilla are set to face on June 17 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The two fighters will be facing a different kind of pressure going into the fight, with Prograis making his debut under the Matchroom promotional banner. He will be eager to impress against Zorrilla and move onto the plethora of opportunities available if he moves up to 140lbs, including Devin HaneyTeofimo Lopez and Vasiliy Lomachenko among others. Zorrilla has only tasted defeat once in his career but has never been in with someone of the calibre of Prograis – however, the rewards are clear for the Puerto Rican fighter.

Since his sole defeat to Taylor, Prograis has once again shown his power, knocking out all four of his opponents since the loss to the Scotsman. The New Orleans-born fighter has eye-catching speed, which has caused plenty of problems for opponents throughout his career. He is tough and has a good chin. He can go toe-to-toe when needed, but his ring IQ is undoubtedly one of his strengths – knowing when to engage and when not to.

Zorrilla currently boasts a 17-1 professional record, with 13 wins by knockout. The Puerto Rican has nothing to lose and everything to gain against Matchrooms newest recruit.

The History of Rougarou

The New Orleans-born fighter went on to finish his amateur career with an impressive record of 87-7. He also competed at the 2012 Olympics without medalling – before he entered the professional ranks in 20212.

During his professional career, Prograis has only tasted defeat once against Taylor but has bounced back in style, including a brutal eleventh-round stoppage of Jose Zepeda. Prograis impressed in the World Boxing Super Series, winning his quarter-final bout against Terry Flanagan via unanimous decision. His accurate counter-punching often sees him pick apart opponents with ease. He possesses enough power to inflict a light-out moment on any fighter. In the semi-final of the World Boxing Super Series, he took apart Kiryl Relikh before inflicting the stoppage in round six.

The Future for Regis Prograis

Prograis at 34 years old, still has a lot to offer, and with his move to Matchroom, he should be offered some fascinating fights in the future, assuming he comes through the test on June 17. The New Orleans-born fighter will want to make a statement against Zorrilla before hopefully moving on to face the likes of Haney and Tank Davis.
