George Kambosos Jr. vs. Jake Wyllie: Press Conference Quotes and Fight Prediction

George Kambosos Jr. (21-3, 10 KOs) and Jake Wyllie (16-1, 15 KOs, 1 NC) will soon face each other in a super lightweight clash.

Their bout headlines a co-promotion between Matchroom Boxing and DiBella Entertainment – done in association with Tasman Fighters – at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia. Boxing fans around the world can catch the action live on DAZN.

Originally, Kambosos was set to face Daud Yordan. However, the Indonesian was hospitalized just days before fight night. As a result, Wyllie stepped in to keep the event on. Ahead of their March 22 clash, both fighters spoke at a press conference. Below is some of what they had to say.

George Kambosos Jr. vs. Jake Wyllie Press Conference Quotes

George Kambosos Jr.

Obviously first, it’s great to be back home in Sydney,” said Kambosos. “Big fight here. Big buzz in the city…This is an extremely important fight and obviously yeah, we had a certain opponent [before], but that’s boxing. You always got to be ready for the unexpected and for us we just adapt. We’ve been through so many scenarios. We’ve been through so many experiences at the championship level. At the biggest level in the game. So, one guy’s out? Who’s the next guy? And of course respect to Jake [Wyllie] jumping in. His style was suited. We said ok. Give him the shot…”

Jake Wyllie

“Man, it’s huge,” said Wyllie. “We prepared to come down here for sparring for my fight that was to be in a couple of weeks time. My Luke [Meldon] and I, we had booked tickets to come and watch George [Kambosos Jr.] and as it is, here we are fighting him.”

“It was about quarter past nine on Sunday night and I was half asleep – well, I was asleep – and I sort of rolled over and thought ‘jeez, who’s calling me this late’ and it was my manager and I thought ‘I better call him back’ and there it was. He said ‘mate, George Kambosos’ opponent’s out.’ He’s like ‘you willing to step up and take this on?’ And without anyhesitation I said ‘yes, my word I am.’ And I could not sleep for the rest of the night. I’m so excited.”

Fight Prediction

Wyllie may have more success in knocking out opponents, but the level he has done it at is well below that of Kambosos’. The former unified lightweight champion should be the faster of the two and will have little trouble outboxing his fellow Australian. Expect Kambosos to win via a comfortable unanimous decision.
