Yuriorkis Gamboa Out Of Colbert Bout Due To Injury

WBA Super-Featherweight Interim champion Chris Colbert will have to style on for his title defense as it was reported today that Yuriorkis Gamboa had to withdraw due to injury.

Keth Idec of Boxingscene noted that Gamboa suffered a rib injury and a lesser heel injury while training in Las Vegas and will not be able to challenge Colbert for his WBA interim super featherweight title on July 3rd. Premier Boxing Champions is in the process of looking for a replacement to face Colbert in the main event that was to take place from” The Punch Bowl” in Carson, California (see, I can’t even write that in not scoff, the Dignity Health Sports Complex).

The undefeated Colbert (15-0, 6 KOs) was last in action last December, taking out Jaime Arboleda in seven rounds. Gamboa was last seen on the wrong end of a wide pints decision against current WBC titleholder Devin Haney.

The late replacement name will be an interesting one to pop up, but more than likely provide the same amount of favorable opposition to Colbert that the well-seen better days Gamboa at age 39. With the recent rash of injuries, Gamboa may not enter a ring again at this point in his storied career as the former Olympian and three-division champion.

A fun fact I saw in the story was that Gamboa is ranked 5th in the WBA, by the way. This is why people hate the World Boxing Association, as they tend to keep slotting fighters where they shouldn’t be. Gamboa fits this description coming off of back-to-back losses.
