Warrington-Lara Ends In Abrupt Techincal Draw

Josh Warrington looked for redemption, when he took on Mauricio Lara in front of his hometown Leeds, England crowd, but he didn’t get it as they all went home with a technical draw.

The Matchroom Boxing main event outdoor contest labeled “Repeat or Redeem” from Emerald Headingley Stadium that aired on DAZN was the grudge match of the two that saw Lara pull off the upset win back in February.

Warrington started off firing with rights and combinations as he was able to land early against Lara. This was a different-looking Warrington from the opening round of the last fight and looked worlds more comfortable in the ring. Lara, however, was still pressing through and landing solid shots on Warrington in between these exchanges.

A huge cut over the left eye of Lara from a clash of heads in the second round was the end of the contest, much to the disappointment of those in attendance. Since the cut happened within the first four rounds of the fight, this was ruled a technical draw and ended a fight that saw the pyro entrance leading Warrington in the ring longer than the six minutes of action we have gotten into the ring.

What happens from here is we hope that they run this fight back again for the third time as this one was starting to pick up before the ringside doctor waived this fight over.

“All these people paid their hard-earned money and wanted to see me get redemption tonight, “Warrington said after the fight. “I feel that obviously with this crowd here. I was looking to put on a performance.”

“I’m just sorry. I’ll have my redemption eventually.”

Earlier in the night, ladies Undisputed Lightweight champ Katie Taylor of Ireland dominated American Jennifer Han over a 10 round unanimous decision. Also, English unbeaten Welterweight Conor Benn continued his ascension to a possible title shot with a 10 round decision win over veteran Adrian Granados.

But, in the end, it was a rough way to close out a night of fights from England with the unfulfilling two rounds.  Hopefully, they’ll find a way to restart this Warrington-Lara rivalry which looked to be a fun main event to end so flatly.
