On Saturday, August 10 at the Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, we saw Vergil Ortiz (22-0, 21 KOs) defeat Serhii Bohachuk (24-2, 23 KOs) by majority decision. The entire card was shown live on DAZN in over 200 countries.

The opening round was entertaining, with Bohachuk having success with the right hand. Ortiz Jr. began well, putting his shots together before rocking the Ukrainian with a big overhand right – which was preceded by Ortiz taking a knee, giving Bohachuk a 10-8 round. The second round saw both have success, but the shots from Ortiz Jr. were more eye-catching.
In the third round, Bohachuk continued to apply pressure, with Ortiz getting the better of the exchanges. The bodywork from the Texan fighter is relentless, with the Ukrainian fighter having his moments.
Over the next couple of rounds, the pressure from the Ukrainian didn’t let up, with Ortiz Jr. still working smartly off his jab and putting his shots together well on the inside. Bohachuk enjoyed a good round seven before landing a left cross, which knocked down Ortiz, before the Texan fighter applied a lot of pressure, landing some heavy combinations. What a round that was.
Bohachuk continued having success with the straight right before Ortiz Jr. ended the ninth strong, which he carried into round 10, backing up the Ukrainian with his jab. Round 11 was a back-and-forth round with Bohachuk having success with the right hand, but a huge left hook from Ortiz Jr. wobbled the Ukrainian, who showed his heart to have success in the rest of the round.
The final round saw Ortiz hurt Bohachuk once more before the Ukrainian fired back again. It was an exhilarating round, that saw success for both, with the cleaner work coming from Ortiz. It was tipped to be a phone booth fight, but it was so much more, there was great skill and power on display from both fighters.
As both made their way to the centre of the ring, the scorecards were read, with the first at 113-113, and the other two reading 114-112 x2 in favour of the Texan fighter.

In the post-fight interview, Ortiz was understandably happy and said: “It finally paid off, it feels great.” He continued: “I felt like I did enough.”
Looking to the future, Ortiz Jr. said: “I’m the best in the world right now, and I’m going to show it.”
He was also asked about facing Terence Crawford in the future and without hesitation, he said: “I want to show I have what it takes to beat him (Terence Crawford).”
He added: “We have to fight the winner of (Sebastian) Fundora-(Errol) Spence.”
Undercard
Charles Conwell (20-0, 15 KOs) won by second-round knockout against Khiary Gray (18-7, 13 KOs) with a devastating body shot in their super welterweight clash.
Kenneth Sims Jr. (21-2-1, 8 KOs) dominated Jonathan Romero (35-5, 19 KOs) landing a slew of heavy body shots throughout which enabled him to win the super lightweight fight by TKO, with Romero’s corner pulling him out of the contest at the end of round five.
Gabriela Fundora (13-0, 6 KOs) defeated Daniela Ansenjo (16-3-3, 2 KOs) for Fundora’s IBF women’s world flyweight title. It was a unanimous decision with all judge’s scorecards reading 100-90.
Joel Iriarte (4-0, 4 KOs) impressed, as he demolished Miguel Ortiz (3-2, 1 KO) in the opening round of their welterweight bout
Preliminaries
Cecelia Braekhus (38-2-1, 9 KOs) defeated Maricela Cornejo (19-7, 7 KOs) to win the vacant WBC super welterweight interim title. The judges awarded Braekhus the victory with the scorecards reading 96-93 x3.
Eric Priest (14-0, 8 KOs) beat Luka Lozo (9-3-1, 8 KOs) in their middleweight fight by unanimous decision. The judges scorecards read 100-93 x3.
Johnny Canas (5-0, 2 KOs) extended his 100% professional record, defeating Joseph Cruz Brown (7-9, 3 KOs) in their lightweight contest by unanimous decision. The scorecards from the judges read 40-36 x3.
Jordan Fuentes (1-0, 0 KOs) won his super bantamweight debut, defeating James Mulder (0-3, 0 KOs) by unanimous decision, with the judges scorecards reading 39-37 x2 and 40-36.
