Hamzah Sheeraz (19-0, 15 KOs) has a dominant performance in his latest showing, but what could be next for the rising middleweight?
Sheeraz did not even need the entire first round in order to get the win on Feb. 10. He dropped former title challenger Liam Williams twice before the Welshman’s corner put a stop to the fight. With the win, Sheeraz remains the Commonwealth middleweight champion. This was his first defence of the belt, having won it in a second-round stoppage of River Wilson-Bent in late 2022.
Attention now turns towards possible future opponents for Sheeraz, who has been on a dominant run since moving up to middleweight. Big Fight Weekend takes a look at two fighters who could possibly face the Brit next.
Two Possible Opponents for Hamzah Sheeraz
Just a few months ago, Nathan Heaney (18-0, 6 KOs) got the win of his career with a majority decision victory over Denzel Bentley. This made him the British middleweight champion. In March, he defends that title against Brad Pauls at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England, on a Queensberry Promotions card.
Should Heaney emerge victorious over Pauls, a fight between him and Sheeraz would be very easy to make. For one, both fighters are promoted by Queensberry Promotions. Additionally, they are ranked by the WBO and WBA. Facing each other would solidify their position in those rankings and bring them closer to a world title shot. The fight would also have the British and Commonwealth middleweight titles on the line. Clashes like these are the ones that get many fight fans talking. In short, it is an easy bout to make and would do a lot to both of their careers.
Chris Eubank Jr.
Chris Eubank Jr. (33-3, 24 KOs) last took on Liam Smith in a rematch, a fight he won by stoppage. At the moment, he is without a fight. A potential clash with Sheeraz would be a massive fight at the British level. It is also a clash Sheeraz himself is seeking.
“Eubank Jr, Liam Smith or the British champion Nathan Heaney, that is the goal for me and, after Saturday night, everyone is going to see that I’m ready for those fights, Inshallah,” said the Ilford native going into his fight against Williams.
Eubank has yet to comment on whether he is interested in such a fight. Given that Sheeraz has shown an interest in making it happen and the fact that this would be a massive fight at the British level, seeing this happen later this year may not be an outrageous prospect.
