Josh Padley Upsets Mark Chamberlain on Joshua vs Dubois Undercard

September 21 has finally arrived with Anthony Joshua (28-3, 25 KOs) taking on Daniel Dubois (21-2, 20 KOs) for the IBF world heavyweight title in a Riyadh Season event. Wembley Stadium will be sold out with 96,000 people ready to see an all-British heavyweight world title fight. Unbeaten lightweight southpaw Mark Chamberlain (16-1, 12 KOs) opened the card against Josh Padley (15-0, 4 KOs), with the Doncaster fighter causing a massive upset.

The first round saw Padley outwork Chamberlain and land some nice short combinations. Chamberlain looked untroubled and landed some nice single shots. The second round saw a more aggressive approach from “Thunder,” who stayed on the front foot for the whole round. Padley had his moments, picking his shots well, but a much better round for the Portsmouth fighter.

The third round for the Doncaster native was another promising one as he closed the distance effectively, landing his shots and smothering the work of his opponent. Round four was a frustrating round for the Portsmouth fighter – as he now has two cuts around his eye. Outside of single shots, it’s been difficult for Chamberlain with Padley landing his shots and avoiding attacks from his opponent.

The sixth round saw Padley do the better work, landing an eye-catching left hook, which Chamberlain took well. The Portsmouth fighter started the next round well, looking lighter on his feet and done some good work on the inside. Padley remained calm and ended the round well.

Chamberlain slowly seemed to be coming back into the fight, but a sharp combination from Padley sent Chamberlain to the canvas in round eight. “Thunder” had a much better ninth round, but he received another warning for illegally pushing his opponent, and the referee deducted a point. At this point, the Portsmouth man needs a big final round.

The final round was better for Chamberlain as he landed some smart combinations, but Padley was still moving well and got to the final bell unscathed. We went to the judge’s scorecards, which read 95-93 and 96-92 x2, giving the underdog the biggest win of his career by unanimous decision.
