Is Lomachenko “Close to Unbeatable?”

Even though he’s only had 14 professional fights, it has been readily apparent for several years that Vasiliy Lomachenko is one of the elite fighters in the world in any division.

However, are we ready to go so far as to say, Lomachenko is unbeatable?

Well, his latest victim from back in April basically said so, recently.

As part of a recent Sky Sports boxing broadcast, Anthony Crolla, the British lightweight contender who challenged Lomachenko in April in Los Angeles only to be beaten by 4th round KO, wasn’t bashful about telling any future opponent what awaits them:

“He’s a complete fighter. Speed. Defense. He hits harder than you expect. And just so clever.” Crolla was then asked, “is he unbeatable?” He responded, “No man is unbeatable. But, he’s close to it. He’s a complete fighter.”

Lomachenko is getting set to take on Crolla’s fellow Brit, Luke Campbell, in a showdown on August 31st in London. Campbell is the former 2012 London Olympic gold medalist in the bantamweight division, is 20 – 2 with 16 KOs and is the number one ranked Lightweight Contender by the WBC.

Lomachenko already owns the WBA, the WBO and lineal lightweight champion designation, currently. The Campbell fight will be for the vacant WBC belt, also.

The Ukrainian is a two-time gold medalist from Beijing in ’08 in the featherweight Division and 2012 in London in the lightweight division. And, he already has professional World Titles in both the Featherweight and Junior Lightweight divisions before popping up to lightweight in May of 2018.

That’s when he defeated Columbiam Jorge Linares by 10th round TKO at Madison Square Garden to capture the WBA belt. Lomachenko has since defended it twice, including against Crolla.

As Crolla said, probably the most underrated part of what Lomachenko does is that he is very difficult to hit and he quickly demoralizes his opponents with that before pouring on his offense.

Now, we wait to see if Campbell is up to the challenges that Lomachenko will pose.

We at least know that he’s been warned.
