Is Demsey McKean Next For Tyson Fury?

Tyson Fury is one of the best-known boxers across all weight divisions and has a larger-than-life personality that dominates the heavyweight scene. Since making his much-vaunted comeback in 2018, Fury has continued to take on the biggest fights and draw huge crowds to his bouts. He is currently the WBC heavyweight world champion and is actively looking for a new opponent to take on in the ring this summer.

Although big names like Oleksandr Uysk and Anthony Joshua have been talked about, no one really knows for sure who his opponent will be yet. One story which has broken around boxing recently though are talks between Fury’s team and little-known Australian fighter Demsey McKean.

But what is this all about?

Fury vs McKean: What’s the story so far?

It’s no secret that WBC heavyweight champ Tyson Fury is looking for an opponent to face in a summer 2023 defense of his crown. This search has led his team to apparently confirm talks are now underway with Demsey McKean for a fight in Australia this August.

This latest development appears to have occurred after Fury flew out to Australia recently to watch his friend Joseph Parker fight in Melbourne. While there, it seems he was busy exploring the options in Australia for potential title fights. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, it is believed that talks are going well and an August contest between the two could happen.

What can we expect from this clash if it happens?

One thing which seems fairly certain from this potential bout is raised eyebrows from those who follow boxing. To go from a trying to broker a blockbuster clash with Oleksandr Usyk to stepping into the ring with a much lower profile Demsey McKean is certainly unexpected. It is likely that not many people in the boxing world will be impressed by the “Gypsy King” taking this contest on!

As a result of the apparent gulf in class between the two athletes, it is likely to be a fairly easy Tyson Fury win. Although upsets do happen in the sport, Fury is expected to have far too much power, guile and experience for McKean to handle.

There is expected to be plenty of interest from sports bettors in this clash. This is not only because of the high probability of a Fury win making bets on this outcome popular but also because of the range of markets boxing matches like this offer to get involved with. If you are planning to wager on any potential Fury/McKean bout and need the best sportsbook for boxing betting, then the bet365 app is an option to consider.

Who is Demsey McKean?

This is perhaps the biggest question for many boxing fans when it comes to any future fight with Fury. Clearly McKean is not that well-known on the global boxing scene and is not someone you would call a top fighter for the Gypsy King to face.

Despite this, we need to give the Aussie fighter the respect his record deserves. Coming from a kickboxing/Thai boxing background, he became a pro boxer in 2014 and has won all 22 of his fights to date. He has taken the victory 14 times by knockout, which shows what a powerful, dangerous puncher he is. McKean has also sparred with elite level boxers such as Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte in the past. This all shows he is no walkover and someone who Fury needs to take seriously.

Is this a setup for Joshua?

With Zhilei Zhang facing a mandatory rematch with Joe Joyce and Andy Ruiz Jr’s purse demands for a Fury clash making this contest improbable, it seems as if McKean might be the only fight available this summer for the WBC champ. But could a decision to face the Aussie slugger also hide another motive in the Fury camp?

Every boxing fan knows that Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua is the fight most hotly anticipated in the heavyweight division. It is also a fight which has proved tough to arrange in the past for various reasons! Interestingly though, Aussie slugger McKean has sparred with Joshua in the past as previously noted.

This has left fight fans wondering if Fury is thinking of taking on a clash with McKean as a warm-up for any potential Joshua battle in the future. With Joshua recently starting on the comeback trail with a victory over Jermaine Franklin, he may be wanting another fight himself before taking on Fury.

With Joshua unavailable for a while due to this, Fury may see McKean as the ideal fight to fill time with before he can face his fellow Brit. It would certainly mean Fury is not out of the ring for too long until a bout with Joshua can be confirmed and offers him a fairly easy contest against someone who has also been in the ring with Joshua.

Fury vs McKean: August 2023 fight could happen

With talks still ongoing between the two camps, nothing has been confirmed yet in terms of this fight definitely happening. As is the case in modern heavyweight boxing, it might be a few long weeks yet until all the contracts are signed. If this bout does take place though, it will be an interesting choice of opponent for Fury and a clash which is bound to generate plenty of excitement as a result.
