Gervonta Davis Next Fight: WBA Lightweight Defence Set for December 14

Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is the current WBA lightweight champion and was last in action when he stopped Frank Martin on June 15 this year. Dan Rafael had revealed what dates were being considered for his next fight, and Rafael has now confirmed via his Fight Freaks Unite Substack that “Tank” will face promotional free agent Lamont Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) on Dec. 14 in Houston.

What to Expect from Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr.

The fight between Davis and Roach will happen because the WBA granted Roach “special permission” to move up in weight to challenge the lightweight title held by “Tank.” Rafael revealed via sources that the Premier Boxing Champions Prime Video pay-per-view event headlined by Davis and Roach is set to be announced next week. Fighting in Houston was decided by “Tank” as he spends a lot of time in the city.

Rafael also reveals that the WBA consulted their super featherweight interim titlist and mandatory challenger Albert Batyrgaziev and that “after the respective analysis and based on the internal rules of the organization, it was decided to grant the request to Roach under certain conditions.” Conditions of the fight also included that Roach, should he win has five days to decide whether he will keep the 135 or 130 pound title. If the Washington-born fighter loses he must face Batyrgaziev within 120 days of the “Tank” fight.

Davis vs. Lomachenko Fell Through and Roach Emerged as the Opponent

As reported by various outlets, “Tank” wanted a unification fight against IBF lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko with PBC and Top Rank nearing a deal. This deal was dead in the water when Lomachenko decided to take off the rest of the year, leaving Davis needing a new opponent.

Rafael also revealed there were discussions for a rematch with Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz before he lost his WBA super lightweight title to Jose Valenzuela. The new WBA champ then became an option but “Tank” would only fight him at lightweight, with conversations subsequently going nowhere.

Roach was last seen in action when he defeated Feargal McCrory by eighth-round TKO on June 28 this year.
