Former champ Molina headlines Saturday Mexican fight card

Saturday night will mark the second significant fight card to be held in the Western Hemisphere, since the Covid-19 pandemic shut down all of sports in mid-March. That’s when former Junior Middleweight World champion, Carlos Molina, will headline a five-fight bill in Mexico.

The fights are part of Molina’s own, “King Carlos Promotions” and will be televised through Facebook on the “Fight Night Live” platform for a minimal $5 price:

“I’m excited for King Carlos Promotions to be promoting this live boxing event and grateful to have been able to create opportunities for other boxers to stay active and fight, as well as myself during these difficult times,” said Molina, the former IBF champion in a press release.

“I’m thrilled that this show will be the very first on the new Facebook PPV platform and that we can bring boxing back to the fans.”

Molina (31 – 11- 2, 10 KOs), will be taking on fellow Mexican 154 pounder Michi Munoz (27 – 10 – 1) in the  town of Patcuaro in the main event of the online broadcast, which will start at 9 p.m. Eastern time and be broadcast in Spanish only.

Molina captured the IBF Jr. Middleweight title with a split decision win in Las Vegas over Ishe Smith in September of 2013. He quickly lost the belt in his next fight in October of 2014 in Cancun, Mexico on a 12-round decision to Cornelius Brundage.

The veteran Molina, who just turned 37 last week, has had an up-and-down career since late 2014, as he won six straight fights after the Brundage loss. But, then, he lost four fights in a row in 2017 – 18.

Molina also fought in Patzcuaro back in February against Nestor Fernando Garcia, whom he defeated by TKO stoppage.

Earlier in April, the first live boxing event in the Western Hemisphere since the Coronavirus outbreak took place in Managua, Nicaragua. In a fight card with fans practicing social distancing and wearing protective PPE masks, the the main event saw fellow Nicaraguans, Robin Zamiro, win an eight round decision over Ramiro Blanco.

Saturday night’s show in Mexico will not have fans in attendance.

The co-featured bout, will also have a Junior Middleweight fighter, Alejandro ‘Pajaro’ Davila (19-1-2, 7 KOs), of Mexico City against the same Nestor Fernando Garcia, (23-20-1, 17 KOs) Molina defeated 3 months ago, in a scheduled 10 rounder.
