Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo Bout To Be September 30th?

Although it’s yet to be officially announced, it looks like the return of undisputed super middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez will come later in the month of September and not be part of Mexican Independence Day weekend in Las Vegas.

Our insider Dan Rafael reported on social media that Canelo’s defense against WBC middleweight champ Jermall Charlo will now apparently happen on September 30th,

Rafael also did not mention a site for the Canelo-Charlo matchup, as rumors persisted this week that the bout might not be in Vegas, but rather in Charlo’s home state of Texas due to a conflict with the UFC pay per view on Saturday night September 16th.

Dana White’s MMA organization, based in Vegas, confirmed this week that their “UFC 290” show will happen at the T-Mobile Arena on the Vegas strip for that night. This obviously made things problematic for Alvarez’s latest defense for that same date and also in Las Vegas.

Canelo was last in the ring in May for his return to his Mexican homeland, as he dominated England’s John Ryder over 12 rounds in front of over 50,000 of his partisan fans at a Guadalajara soccer stadium. It was the first world title fight for Alvarez in Mexico in over a decade.

As we wrote last week, Alvarez, 59-2-2, 39 KOs, surprisingly signed a multi-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime with the bout this Fall being the first PPV and the unbeaten middleweight champ Charlo as the opponent.

Charlo has been in hibernation

Charlo, 32-0, 22 KOs, has been inactive for two full years now, since his decision win over Juan Montiel in 2021. Amazingly, the WBC has never ordered him to fight their mandatory challenger in that time, especially the last 6-9 months, yet let him keep lording over their 160 lb. title.

Carlos Adames is the interim champ at 160 lb. and just came off a TKO main event win in Minnesota over Julian Williams last Saturday night.

Alvarez has fought numerous times in Vegas on the Mexican holiday weekends. This included previously fighting Gennady Golovkin for a third time and winning by decision last September.
