Report- Welterweight champ Spence will face Garcia this fall

Although we don’t yet have a date, it looks like Unified Welterweight Champion Errol Spence will in fact fight former World title Challenger Danny Garcia later this fall in Spencer’s first fight back, since his horrific one car crash last October.

The Athletic’s boxing insider, Mike Coppinger, reported on Monday that sources close to the discussions say that the fight will not only happen in the fall but will likely be on Pay-per-view:

This falls in line with the original plan that was to have had Spence and Garcia meet this past January for the IBF and WBC belts. That is, until Spence suffered a fractured jaw and concussion in an early morning October 2019 car crash over a median and catapulting into a business parking lot in Dallas, Texas

The spectacular accident was captured on video and came just three weeks after Spence’s signature victory to this point of his career. That was a 12-round decision win over WBC champ, Shawn Porter, in Los Angeles (above) last September.

Spence was later charged with DWI by Dallas authorities, but will largely escape most penalties, as there was minimal property damage and no serious injury other than to himself.

Amazingly, with Spence have been thrown from the vehicle, he avoided any life-threatening injury or even long-term hospitalization. And, he began resuming light boxing activities and training early this year.

The unbeaten former U.S. Olympian has an 26-0, 21 KOs record. And, he won the IBF version of the 147 lb. title in May of 2017, when he stopped English world champ, Kell Brook, in the 11th round in Sheffield, England.

Spence seemed to confirm that something is in the works without saying his opponent, with this Monday afternoon social media post:

As for Garcia, he is one of the top contenders in the welterweight division, but was beaten in two title challenges, first  by WBA Champion Keith Thurman losing on decision in March 2017. Then, Porter beat him over 12 rounds for the vacant WBC 147 lb. belt in September, 2018.

Garcia went ahead and fought in January and won over Ivan Redkach by unanimous decision moving him to 36-2 and keeping him in prime position to fight Spence.

Spence has become a high-end, promotional enhanced fighter for Premier Boxing Champions with each of his last two title fights being on Pay-per-view. It was believed that he would have been ready to fight this summer prior to the outbreak of Covid 19.

Spence also fought in March of 2019 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Pay-per-view and decisioned former Undisputed Lightweight champion Mikey Garcia over 12 rounds.

It’s unclear from Coppinger’s initial reporting, if PBC hopes to fight in a location with at least some fans in attendance, due to social distancing guidelines for the Coronavirus.
