Report- Davis and Santa Cruz looking at June PPV date

Amidst all of professional sports shutting down in the United States this weekend due to the Coronavirus threat, there is at least some positive news about a future title fight fight this summer that may very well land on Pay-per-View.

A report Sunday from Boxingscene.com says that two division World Champ Gervonta Davis told them that he’s in discussions with fellow two-division World Champ Leo Santa Cruz for a 12-round bout for this June and likely on Showtime pay-per-view:

When last saw “Tank” Davis in December, he outlasted veteran Yuriorkis Gamboa via a 12th round TKO to gain the WBA 135 lb. title pushing his unbeaten record to 23-0 with 22 KOs. That was Davis’s debut at lightweight where he is also seeking a potential mega-fight with unified champion Vasiliy Lomachenko

However, for now, it’s an attractive fight with Santa Cruz that’s on the radar. Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19 KOs) won his most recent bout in November by unanimous decision over Miguel Flores to capture the WBA Jr. Lightweight title.

Santa Cruz also told the website that he would be willing to fight Davis at either Junior Lightweight or the Lightweight 135 lb. limit. However, that he would prefer the fight at 130-pound.

Obviously, the lesser weight will be a concern for Davis, as he had trouble making the 135 lb. weight three months ago, and it was for the third different time in his career that he had to shed weight the afternoon before his fight.

This fight has been a logical, easy one to see happening as both fighters are promoted by the Premier Boxing Champions umbrella. Plus, Leonard Ellerbe, Floyd Mayweather and Mayweather Promotions have wanted Davis to progress from simply headlining on Showtime premium cable to Pay per View.

And certainly, fighting Santa Cruz, who has held multiple world titles would be worthy of a possible Pay-Per-View fight.

It is believed that the fight would be held at the Staples Center ,where PBC previously held the Errol Spence Shawn Porter unified World Welterweight Title Fight last September and before that, was the site of Deontay Wilder’s first fight with Tyson Fury in December of 2018.

Santa Cruz, who is from L.A., has headlined multiple times in California, including twice previously at Staples Center, when he beat Abner Mares both times by decision.
