Moloney hires attorney to enforce mandatory status
Australian junior bantamweight contender Andrew Moloney has hired well-known boxing attorney Pat English to apply pressure and assert his rights as a mandatory challenger against Kal Yafai. Those unfamiliar with the work of English, I highly suggest that you listen to one of the early episodes of the Boxing Esq. Podcast as he runs down his credentials in the sweet science.
Moloney had stopped Miguel Gonzalez in March in a title eliminator, which the WBA ruled would give the winner the next shot at Yafai following his victory against Norbelto Jimenez. Yafai had defeated Jimenez by a wide margin last June in Providence.
I’ve done everything I can to make this fight happen. I deserve my shot! #YafaiMoloney https://t.co/6HDAVi4l6P

While the WBA stated the Moloney is given an opportunity no later than March 20, 2020, of this year, the issue seems to be on the other side as Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn for Yafai has been working on making matches with everyone else. Originally Yafai was scheduled to have a unification bout with WBC champion Juan Francisco Estrada. Those plans got nixed when Estrada suffered a hand injury that wiped out a potential match on the January 30th card in Miami.
Instead of getting the mandatory for Yafai with Moloney slated, they are working on a title defense against former champion Roman Gonzalez for Feb. 29 instead. This is where English comes in and has sent Hearn a legal letter reminding him of the WBA ruling.
Moloney speaking with Boxingscene.com, feels that at this point, he’s long earned this title shot and is waiting for the opportunity.
“I worked my way up the rankings, beat (former flyweight titlist) Luis Concepcion in far more convincing fashion that Yafai did,” Moloney mentioned to BoxingScene.com. “I flew to Chile for an eliminator and knocked out the number-two contender (Gonzalez). I just won the interim title against [Dharry], the number-five contender in the world.
“What more do I have to do? I’m grateful to the WBA for those opportunities and am now ready to challenge for the world title. Let’s make this fight happen.”
Whenever you are involved in a car accident or have a loved one who has suffered from mesothelioma, you acquire the services of an attorney to get results quickly. Last noted act in boxing which this happened was with Regis Prograis in August, where he had to file an injunction against the World Boxing Super Series over missed payments. This issue all was, of course, resolved and led to his match against Josh Taylor in October. Here’s hoping that English’s involvement would clear the air, and we finally get the match between Moloney and Yafai, which really should’ve happened by now.
