Mikaela Mayer reveals her dream fights and sets a bold target for her career

On August 29, at the bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham, Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron headlines the MVPW-06 fight card, promoted by Most Valuable Promotions, live on Sky Sports and ESPN+. Mayer will be defending her WBA and WBC super welterweight titles, while Cameron will defend her WBO title. Ahead of this intriguing unification clash, Mayer spoke to Ariel Helwani, revealing her six-fight MVP deal could be the end of her career and teasing two huge potential fights after Cameron.

Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs) will be fighting to successfully defend her WBA and WBC super welterweight titles, while Cameron (22-1, 8 KOs) will be defending her WBO crown.

Mayer has won three consecutive fights since losing a razor-close split decision to Natasha Jonas, with scorecards of 97-93 for Mayer, while the other two favoured the work of Jonas with scores of 96-94 and 96-95.

Cameron is the only fighter to defeat Katie Taylor, with the Irish fighter winning the rematch. Since losing to Taylor, Cameron has won four fights in a row, including last time out against Michaela Kotaskova to win the vacant WBO super welterweight title.

Mikaela Mayer reveals her six-fight wishlist

Looking ahead to the future, Mayer teased some potential huge fights for the remainder of her career:

“If I get the fights that I want, I think 6 fights is plenty.

“I do feel like I’m fighting better than ever, but I don’t think I want more than 6 fights. If I can get the big fights that I really want, I think that’ll be plenty for me.

“Chantelle Cameron, Lauren Price, Clarissa Shields… that would make for an incredible year. I would have no complaints.

“I was one of the names Claressa called out after her last win, so it’s good to know that she still wants to fight, and I can guarantee MVP won’t stand in the way of that.”

Mikaela Mayer: The Big Fight Weekend verdict

We are backing Mikaela Mayer to get the win against Cameron, and if she does, it looks like there will be only big fights on the horizon.

A potential showdown with either Lauren Price or Claressa Shields would be huge. Mayer has proven she deserves the biggest fights with her performances. Her two losses have been close decisions against Jonas and Alycia Baumgardner. Many felt Mayer did enough to win both of those bouts.

She has the ability to compete and beat Price and/or Shields. Whether she does or not remains to be seen, but first she has to navigate her way past Cameron.
