Gary Russell Jr names two fighters and explains why they beat Gervonta Davis
Gary Russell Jr comes from a family of talented fighters, and his own career has seen him as the WBC featherweight champion, losing only twice, operating at a high level. Recently, the 38-year-old Washington native spoke to Fight Hub TV, where he named two fighters he believes can beat Gervonta Davis and explained why he feels they could beat Tank.
The career of Gervonta Davis
Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) is undoubtedly one of the most talented fighters in recent years. His poise combined with his devastating power has made him one of the most fan-friendly fighters. Despite his lacklustre showing against Lamont Roach Jr, his talent cannot be questioned. However, his lifestyle outside the ring, more specifically his legal troubles, continues to overshadow his huge talent.
His behaviour outside the ring leaves plenty to be desired, but his ability in the ring is excellent. He needs boxing, and boxing needs him. I don’t want to read a Reddit thread in 10 years asking, “What happened to Gervonta Davis?”
Gary Russell Jr names two fighters to topple ‘Tank’
It looks likely that Davis will be out of the ring until 2027, but speaking to Fight Hub TV, Gary Russell Jr praised Gervonta Davis, but was clear on who would beat Davis and why: “I’ll lean more so towards Haney,” said Russell Jr.
“I think Tank is a good fighter, but I think he’s more of a flat-footed fighter. He’s flat-footed. He needs to plant to really get his punches off and stuff like that. Anyone that’s gonna box and have lateral movement is gonna make it a little difficult for him to find him.
“I think Devin Haney will stick to the script. His flaw is his biggest strength. He’s not gonna sit there and try and fight you. He’s not gonna sit there and fight. He’s gonna get the f**k out the way. That’s gonna be his strength (against Davis). He’s gonna move; he’s gonna box. Even with Tank fighting Shakur, I’ll still lean towards Shakur. It’ll be boring as hell, Shakur will move, he’s not gonna take any risks, but he’s gonna put that stick on Tanks a**.
“He’s gonna touch him whenever he wants, move, get out the way, and it wouldn’t be too much going on. I think they’ll both beat Tank in a very long, boring fight.”
