Patrick Day remains “extremely critical” in Chicago hospital

A Sunday night update came on seriously injured New York Junior Middleweight fighter, Patrick Day and the news is grim.

Day, who was knocked out in the 10th round by unbeaten 154 lbs. contender, Charles Conwell, Saturday night in suburban Chicago remains hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury from the fight.

Day’s promoter Lou Dibella of “Dibella Entertainment” released a brief statement with the update Sunday night:

DiBella characterizing Day’s condition as “extremely critical” is another ominous sign of the seriousness of the damage done.

As our Marquis Johns wrote about Saturday night, the Conwell-Day fight opened the DAZN streaming service broadcast of Usyk-Witherspoon main event, with Conwell dominating. Conwell had scored knockdowns in the fourth and eighth rounds before landing a big combination of two lefts and a big right in the 10th round that flattened Day, once and for all.

He stayed on the canvas for several minutes, while being tended to by medical staff and eventually paramedics, who stretchered him out of the Wintrust Arena immediately to Northwestern Hospital nearby.

DiBella’s statement confirmed that Day remains is in a coma after having surgery to relieve swelling in his brain. Unfortunately, this situation is unsettlingly similar to that of Russian Jr. Welterweight contender, Maxim Dadashev and his traumatic brain injury suffered in a televised bout in July in Maryland.

Dadashev also had surgery to relieve swelling in the brain and was in a coma for several days after his TKO loss to Subriel Matias, before Dadashev passed away.

Many in the boxing community community are sending their well wishes, including the fighter that injured Day,

Also, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, who was the main promotional outlet for Saturday night’s DAZN fight card , expressed his concern and well wishes for Day Sunday evening, too:

Day is a 27 year old former New York amateur champion, who had fought 21 times (17-3-1) professionally going into Saturday nights battle with the now 11-0 Conwell.

We will await further word on Day’s condition and like everyone else, hope and pray that it’s a positive update.
