Both men spoke at a press conference ahead of their June 27 contest. Below is some of what they had to say.
Xander Zayas vs. Jaron Ennis press conference quotes
Xander Zayas
“I’m excited,” said Zayas. “48 hours, it’s what [I’ve] been dreaming of since I was a kid. Since I was five, always wanting to be in big fights. Now I get to do it, first pay-per-view, Barclays Center, New York. I’m excited I’m going to take over the world like I’ve been doing.”
“He thinks it’s going to be an easy night. Let him think that. Saturday night I will come out there and do what I do at the highest level. I am going to make the adjustment and come out victorious.”
Jaron Ennis
“I’m feeling great,” said Ennis. “I’m feeling tremendous. It’s been a lot of work, but I’m trying to have some fun, put on a beautiful show, and make it easy work come Saturday night.”
“Camp has been tremendous. I’ve been enjoying myself, putting in a lot of hard work, and being able to work with different guys. Camp has been phenomenal. I can’t wait to show my skills and ability on Saturday and show the world that I am the best. This is my time, this is my show.”
Fight prediction
From Big Fight Weekend’s Ricky Carroll: Zayas’s progression to unified champion has been impressive, as has Top Rank’s management of his career. The Puerto Rican is a disciplined fighter who looks to control the distance and tempo in his fights by working off his jab. He looked equally comfortable fighting on the inside or outside. Zayas is a talented counter-puncher, and it’s vital he utilises this and punishes “Boots.”
Ennis is heavy-handed, and it’s vital he makes Zayas feel this power early on. He’s a brilliant switch-hitter, and this attribute will be vital in unsettling Zayas and creating angles that “Boots” can capitalise on. The power of Ennis is going to be key in this fight and how well Zayas absorbs said power. Looking at the ability of both, we are backing Ennis to win by unanimous decision.
