Xander Zayas recent form
Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) defeated Abass Baraou by a split decision last time. It was a more convincing win than the scorecards suggest. That victory saw the Puerto Rican fighter add the WBA super welterweight title to his WBO title, which he won against Jorge Garcia Perez. Before the Perez win, he stopped Slawa Spomer, who was trained by Roy Jones Jr.
Jaron Ennis recent form
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) fought at 154 pounds for the first time in his previous fight, blowing away Uisma Lima in a round to collect the interim WBA title. Before that victory, Ennis unified at welterweight, beating Eimantas Stanionis to add the WBA strap to his IBF crown. Ennis’ journey with Matchroom Boxing began with the stoppage victory over David Avanesyan, which preceded a dominant points win over Karen Chukhadzhian in their rematch.
Xander Zayas vs Jaron Ennis prediction
Zayas’s progression to unified champion has been impressive, as has Top Rank’s management of his career.
The Puerto Rican is a disciplined fighter who looks to control the distance and tempo in his fights by working off his jab. He looked equally comfortable fighting on the inside or outside. Zayas is a talented counter-puncher, and it’s vital he utilises this and punishes Boots.
Boots is heavy-handed, and it’s vital he makes Zayas feel this power early on. He’s a brilliant switch-hitter, and this attribute will be vital in unsettling Zayas and creating angles that Boots can capitalise on. The power of Ennis is going to be key in this fight and how well Zayas absorbs said power. Looking at the ability of both, we are backing Ennis to win by unanimous decision.
