Richard Torrez Jr welcomes Moses Itauma showdown

On May 23, at the Pyramids of Giza, Richard Torrez Jr will face Frank Sanchez on the Oleksandr Usyk vs Rico Verhoeven undercard. Torrez Jr vs Sanchez will be in the heavyweight division. The entire card will be live on DAZN Pay-Per-View. Ahead of this intriguing card in Egypt, Torrez Jr spoke to Fight Hub TV, welcoming a future showdown with Moses Itauma.

Richard Torrez Jr and Frank Sanchez set for May 23 clash

Richard Torrez Jr (14-0, 12 KOs) enjoyed an impressive amateur career and has continued a steady ascent since turning professional. His best win came two fights ago, when he defeated Guido Vianello by unanimous decision, with scorecards of 98-91 (twice) and 97-92. Last time out, the American blew Tomas Salek away in one round.

Sanchez (25-1, 18 KOs), nicknamed The Cuban Flash, was walking through opponents with ease before he fought Agit Kabayel, who stopped the Cuban in round seven in 2024. He looked troubled by his knee in that fight, where he wore a brace. Since then, he has defeated Ramon Olivas Echeverria. Worryingly, Torrez Jr. vs Sanchez was previously postponed due to the Cuban suffering a knee injury. When fit, Sanchez has great footwork and punches with venom. It looks set to be a fascinating clash with Torrez Jr, who is effective at closing the distance and fighting on the inside.

Richard Torrez Jr welcomes Moses Itauma clash

Torrez Jr has a big task in front of him against the Cuban Sanchez, but when talking to Fight Hub TV, the American welcomed a potential future clash with rising-star Moses Itauma:

“I think he’s a great fighter. I definitely do. I think he has a great team around him as well, with the fighters he’s been fighting. I think that’s been able to showcase his ability even more so. I think that styles make fights, and I think that some of the people he’s been in the ring with, he’s really been able to just showcase his style.

“But I do think that with someone like my style who is a pressure fighter, who’s also quick, and I carry a pop myself, I think it would change the way people fight, and it changes the way people come about it. And again, I’m 100% certain that I have the best tank in boxing. I’m going to show that, and I want to see what happens in the seventh and the eighth round.

“I want to see what would happen when you get into those dirty waters, and you have to grind it out, because that’s what I like. So, let’s make it happen, and I want to put Moses to that test, and I think it would be just a great fight through and through.”
