British heavyweight teases potential clash with David Benavidez
On May 2, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV, David Benavidez defeated Gilberto Ramirez in the headline fight of a PBC Pay-Per-View event available on Prime Video and DAZN. The event was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Sampson Boxing in association with TGB Promotions. This victory saw Benavidez become the unified WBO/WBA cruiserweight champion, while still holding the WBC light heavyweight title. Speculation quickly ignited that we could see him move up to heavyweight, something he had dismissed for now.
Daniel Dubois, who is ready to face Fabio Wardley for Wardley’s WBO heavyweight title on May 9, has welcomed a showdown with Benavidez, should he wish to move to heavyweight in the future.
David Benavidez blows away Gilberto Ramirez
Some wondered how Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) would adapt to moving up to cruiserweight. He quickly alleviated any fears and showcased power and quick hand speed. Ramirez (48-2, 30 KOs) tried to punch with the challenger, but Benavidez was too sharp for the champion. Benavidez varied his shots impressively, and Zurdo simply had no answer. Ramirez was hurt in round four by a series of hooks, and another flurry of punches followed, forcing Ramirez to take a knee.
Swelling around Ramirez’s eye continued to make things difficult for him. Benavidez outpowered and outworked the champion throughout. Benavidez landed a series of heavy hooks in round six, forcing him to take another knee. Zurdo was in no position to continue and was unable to beat the count. What a performance from El Monstruo, who completes a triple crown, with two titles at cruiserweight and one at light heavyweight.
Daniel Dubois welcomes potential David Benavidez showdown
When asked if he saw the David Benavidez vs Gilberto Ramirez fight, Dubois said: “I think I saw the highlights of it. Good, yeah. He’s a good one.”
Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) was then asked if he would be willing to face Benavidez at heavyweight should El Monstruo move up in weight again: “That’s a fight. You never know. He’s done his thing so far, Glory. Yeah, definitely. Let’s get it going.”
