Andy Ruiz chimes in on Fury match

Multiple current titleholder Andy Ruiz Jr. like many in the boxing world Saturday night was watching Tyson Fury defeat Otto Wallin over the Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Ruiz, however, was not all too impressed in the performance of the Gypsy King had put out last night in Las Vegas.

In a tweet after the fight, Ruiz stated, “After that performance there’s no way he beats me with a hand tied behind his back.”

The one-hand behind my back clap back is in response to comments Fury said earlier in the month where he gave this analysis of Ruiz in an interview to ESPN:

“Just an average boxer. Hand speed doesn’t just cut it. There’s a lot of heavyweights who have hand speed. I can beat him with one hand tied behind me back. And even if they want me to stay against the ropes, I’d still beat him out there.”

Fury maintained his lineal championship status by winning by unanimous decision over Wallin. Fury in the match, however, suffered a nasty cut over the right eye that Wallin was looking to take advantage of in the fight. So much so, he wiped the vaseline off that Fury’s team had on it which the referee didn’t catch in the sixth round.

While Ruiz wasn’t amazed at the performance in Fury last night, he has a chance to maintain the championship straps he attained from Anthony Joshua when their rematch takes place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on December 7th. Ruiz back in June shook up the boxing world by beating Joshua at Madison Square Garden by stopping him in the seventh round to have created one of boxing’s biggest upsets in over 16 years.  Also in the process, Ruiz became the first Mexican-American to become heavyweight champion.

While the smack talk in the heavyweight division continues, we’ll see where all of this shakes out after the match in Saudi Arabia.
