Jesse Rodríguez vs. Phumelela Cafu: Lives Results Recap

Jesse Rodríguez vs. Phumelela Cafu Fight Recap

Jesse Rodríguez (22-0, 15 KOs) is now a unified super flyweight world champion following his tenth round technical knockout of Phumelela Cafu (11-1-3, 8 KOs).

The official time of stoppage was 2:07. With the victory, Rodríguez is now the WBC and WBO titlist. He won the WBC title in June last year against Juan Francisco Estrada. This was his second defence of it and the WBO belt also came with the win.

The early rounds saw Cafu stand in certain areas of the ring (mainly the corners) for long periods of time and looking to land counters. Though there were moments where the South African was able to land those shots, Rodríguez was otherwise outworking him for the most part. It appeared that Cafu was trying to nullify his opponent’s footwork, but his approach meant that Rodríguez spent more time in front of the WBO champion.

“Bam” gradually broke down Cafu as the fight went on. Although he got hit with counters from time to time, they did not seem to bother him much. In round 10, Rodríguez landed a hard right hook that wobbled the legs of Cafu. The American proceeded to throw several punches, but none landed before Cafu pulled Rodríguez down to the canvas. Not long after that, the South African’s corner threw in the towel to put an end to proceedings.
