Canelo Alvarez Clarifies Jake Paul Fight Rumours Before May 3 Bout

Canelo Alvarez vs William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) will take place on May 3 at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the Fatal Fury: City of Wolves fight card. Before Alvarez agreed to his historic four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, rumours were swirling that the Meixcan legend was close to agreeing a fight with Jake Paul. In Riyadh ahead of his fight this weekend, Alvarez was asked by Fight Hub TV, just how close the Paul bout was to being made.

Jake Paul Fight ‘Not That Close’

The boxing world speculated regarding Canelo-Paul, with many in the industry saying they thought it was a done deal including Eddie Hearn telling Boxing Social: “Everything I’m hearing is that Canelo-Jake Paul is done.”

As he prepares to face Scull, it’s hard not to wonder what lies ahead. Alvarez will never look past an opponent, but the boxing world will be eager to see Canelo come through May 3 before moving on to the mega-fight against Terence Crawford in September. Canelo is expected to have two more fights in 2026 as part of his deal with Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season.

Canelo spoke to various media outlets after arriving in Riyadh for his undisputed fight against Scull and was asked by Fight Hub TV how close was the Jake Paul fight to be finalised: “Ah, you know, it’s just, we have an agreement to the promoters who go and sell it. The fight and everything, but no, not that close.”
