Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts – from around the world from the past week.
The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of one recap. Over in the United States, a new super flyweight champion was crowned under controversial circumstances.
Title Fights From Around the World: Jasmine Artiga vs. Regina Chávez Ends Controversially
Jasmine Artiga vs. Regina Chávez Fight Recap
Jasmine Artiga (13-0-1, 6 KOs) is now a flyweight champion following her majority decision win over Regina Chávez (8-5-3, 1 KO), but it was not without controversy.
While one judge scored their bout 95-95, the other two had it 98-92 and 96-94 for Artiga. With the victory, she now holds the WBA super flyweight world title. The belt was previously held by Clara Lescurat but became vacant when she reportedly retired. As a result, Artiga and Chávez were ordered to clash for the title.
Artiga-Chávez headlined a ProBox card at the National Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardina, CA. Boxing fans around the world could catch the action live on the ProBox TV YouTube channel. There was also a broadcast in Spanish.
Artiga had a strong start to the fight, having success with counter right hooks. Chávez applied pressure on her opponent by coming forward. In round three, she threw and landed several punches with Artiga against the ropes. In the middle rounds, Artiga stayed on the outside in order to land clean shots from a distance. However, Chávez continued to apply pressure and was beginning to outwork her opponent.
Controversial Ending
Chávez did some of her best work in the second half of the contest. In the later rounds, Artiga was tiring and getting outworked. Chávez had a strong finish, but it was not enough to convince the judges that she had won. The crowd booed loudly when Artiga was announced the winner, making it clear that they disagreed with the decision. While she may be the new champion, it was certainly not without controversy.
