Similar to their first encounter, Beterbiev was the one pressing forward while Bivol was content with being on the back foot. After the halfway point of the fight, Beterbiev’s punch output decreased. This allowed Bivol to string combinations together and outwork his opponent. It also marked a turning point in the fight as the challenger continued outlanding the champion in subsequent rounds. Bivol was still moving off of the back foot, but also stood his ground at times in order to land his power punches.

In round 12, Beterbiev continued to press forward and head hunt. With under 90 seconds to go, Bivol was cut by the left eye. Beterbiev increased his punch output and pursued his opponent around the ring. Bivol stayed on the back foot and did what he could to avoid further damage, eventually making it to the final bell. Though it was a close fight, two of the judges saw Bivol doing the better work over 12 and had him up on their final tallies, making him the undisputed light heavyweight world champion.
