David Benavidez Eyes Cruiserweight Champion If Beterbiev-Bivol Winner Isn’t Next
David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) and David Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) will meet in a highly anticipated light heavyweight clash for Benavidez’s WBC interim and Morrell’s WBA “regular” light heavyweight titles. The entire card will take place at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. It will be available to purchase on Prime Video PPV and PPV.com. Ahead of fight night, “The Mexican Monster” has spoken to The Ring Magazine about his future targets and revealed a potential fascinating move in weight to face another world champion.
David Benavidez Discusses Future Fight Options
David Benavidez: Possible Move to Cruiserweight
Benavidez-Morrell on February 1 could have huge implications for the 175lbs division with Benavidez the WBC interim titlist and mandatory for a title shot against the undisputed king Artur Beterbiev, who will be facing Dmitry Bivol in their rematch on February 22.
The winner of Morrell-Benavidez could be in line for a shot at undisputed glory against the winner of Beterbiev-Bivol 2 but “The Mexican Monster” is not ignoring other possible options. “What I’ve noticed in this boxing game is there are no guarantees,” Benavidez told The Ring regarding a potential shot at all four belts.
“You just have to have a plan A and a plan B, C and D if those don’t work out. If for some reason we don’t get the winner of Beterbiev-Bivol, my plan is to go up to cruiserweight and fight Zurdo Ramirez for his belts.
“We talked to Zurdo’s team, we talked to Oscar De La Hoya and they’re on board with that. So, that’s pretty much my plan B right now. Obviously, first thing’s first with David Morrell.”
He added: “The good thing right now is that we’re in a perfect position.”
“We can make a lot of fights happen. We’re going to take care of David Morrell and then take it from there.”
