Top 5 Legendary Boxing Coaches Behind the Sport’s Greatest Champions

Some boxing names are known to billions of people. The popularity of fighters goes beyond the sport itself. A coach is someone who “creates” an athlete. The success of any athlete largely depends on the strategy and aspirations of his mentor. The names of such boxers as Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, and Muhammad Ali are familiar even to those not fond of boxing. But has anyone thought about who was behind their achievements and helped them achieve fame?

By the way, today any safe au casino real money opens up the opportunity to place bets on boxing with bonuses. This reduces the risk of losing and is ideal for beginners.

The Legendary Coaches Behind Boxing’s Greatest Champions

Legendary Boxing Coaches: John David Jackson

John Jackson, the former middleweight champion of the world, only knew victories for ten years of his professional career. However, in the end, he was defeated, and the most painful for him was the defeat of his future student Bernard Hopkins.

After that, Jackson set about preparing his former rival for an important fight, where Hopkins confidently dominated. Interestingly, Jackson was later able to take revenge on Hopkins by starting to train Sergei Kovalev, who eventually defeated the legendary boxer.

In 2014, Bernard Hopkins, already 49, lost to Kovalev by a unanimous decision. In addition to Hopkins and Kovalev, Jackson also worked with Shane Mosley and Magomed Abdusalamov, who are also famous fighters.

Roberto Garcia

Garcia is a former world featherweight champion. Roberto coached his younger brother Angel, who became the undefeated champion. Among his famous students are Nonito Donaire, Marcos Maidana, Antonio Margarito, and others. His ward, Marcos Maidana, initially considered not the most interesting boxer, thanks to the new coach, was able to give a serious fight to Floyd Mayweather himself. In 2012, Roberto was recognised as the best coach.

Cus D’Amato

Cus D’Amato did not have significant achievements in boxing, as in childhood he was the victim of an attack by an adult man, which led to loss of vision in his left eye. Nevertheless, his most famous students, such as Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson, entered the Boxing Hall of Fame. They became world champions thanks to the unique “pendulum” technique developed by Amato. It is believed that he played a key role in the formation of Tyson as one of the greatest boxers in history. After Amato’s death, Mike faced defeats and scandals and stopped training.

Ignacio Beristain

Beristain was unable to fully realise himself as a boxer due to eye injuries, but as a coach, he achieved significant success. Among his students were such outstanding boxers as Ricardo Lopez, Juan Manuel Marquez, and his younger brother Rafael, as well as Manny Pacquiao. Beristain was famous for his rigour and high demands on discipline, training only hardworking boxers. He was categorically against the “lazy” Julio Cesar Chavez, despite his worldwide fame. During his career, Chavez has trained 25 world champions, which earned him a place in the Boxing Hall of Fame.

Angelo Dundee

Angelo Dundee never entered the ring as a boxer, but that didn’t stop him from raising the most outstanding boxers in history. It was he who turned Muhammad Ali into “a butterfly that stings like a bee.”  You can read more about Ali’s amazing career and life outside of it here.  Meanwhile, among Dundee’s students, in addition to the “Greatest,”  there were other legendary figures: Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, and Carmen Basilio. The era when Ali reached the top coincides with the work of Dundee. Most of the participants in this golden time of boxing are his students. He is considered one of the most successful coaches in the world, and those who went through his school became not just strong fighters but real legends of the sport.
